I don't know if it's correct, but the Snazzy website also has Herb Ohta Jr on the bill for the Kuumbwa gig:

The Kuumbwa Jazz Center is a nice place - intimate venue, they serve wine and beer. My only complaint is that they sometimes pack the chairs in pretty tightly. |

quote: Who is Sally Van Meter? Any info?
Primarily a bluegrass dobro player, although she also plays other styles. I've never heard her play any Hawaiian music.

I have had the great good fortune to play & hang with Sally a lot in the last couple of years and I can tell you that should does indeed play Hawaiian music -- and very well. In fact, she grew up with it - her father had a very popular Hawaiian band. She has said that Hawaiian was the whole reason she took up the dobro!
Sally's tone has been descibed as "spiritual" and I can heartily agree. This is an extremely cool billing, and I wish I had the time to drive down to catch one of the shows.
cheers,

It's interesting that you mentioned her tone. She plays a couple of cuts on a dobro compilation album called "The Great Dobro Sessions". The thing that always stood out in my mind is her tone on the tune "The Great Season Waltz". It's a simple tune but she makes it sound so sweet. I'm looking forward to catching their show.

Aloha All!
Yes as you can see I have Sally Van Meter on the bill. She was inspired to play dobro/steel guitar through the steel player in her father's country band. He was Hawaiian and credits him for inspiring her. She is a good friend of mine and I'm actually just curious! What happens when we mix her in with Cyril and myself? This is going to be a great show! Please come out and support, trying to get a good showing so we can continue to bring more acts to the Great American Music Hall! This has been the hardest gig to get!
The Santa Cruz show has been canceled. Hope to see you at the show!

Please note that the Sweetwater Saloon (Mill Valley) and Kuumbwa Jazz Center (Santa Cruz)shows have been cancelled. So the Great American Music Hall (San Francisco) is the place to be. Tell your friends! |
