Christmas will be here before we know it. Last night I thought I would work out an arrangement of Christmas Island. It is a rough recording using my home made tenor. Two tracks and a solo. I am not much of a singer but I gave it a shot. I hope to get a transcription up on my site soon. You can take a listen at the following link. http://www.rockslide.org/Images/christmas%20island%20dp.mp3 Dominator

Aloha, Dominator
It was so nice to here that song again, Nobody does that song anymore. ( hardly.) I was listening to it, and reminiscing the days my dad and his group use to sing it, during the holidays, and my two sisters use to dance to it. I must've been around 9 or 10, certain songs in your lifetime you don't forget, and this is one of them.
Mahalo for the great memories, and you did a great job! ( i listen to it about 10 times.) :)
Happy Holidays! Kevin |

Thanks guys. I really like that song to. Didn't even realize that it was a Jimmy Buffet song until the other day.
Keith, you are much too kind. I can't imagine what would make you favor my rendition more so than Willie's. He has a great voice and his fingerpicking is impeccable. I was only able to get bits and pieces of the picking parts and getting the timing right provided its own challenge of which I am still working on. Dominator |

Wow, that's really good! Do you record all of your stuff on the computer? If you do, what program do you use?
Yeah, I have to agree with Keith. Your version is way better than Willie K's.
I'll give this ***** (five stars!) |

Brittni, Yes, I do all of my recording on an old pc. I use Guitar Studio 2.0 by Cakewalk. It is a little outdated at this point but it serves its purpose. Hey, with 5 stars maybe I can get on Star Search
Thanks and thanks to Jesse to. I am working on a jazzy little version of Jingle Bells to. Stay tuned. Dominator

Thanks, Dominator! I was shaking my head in disgust at the grocery store just a couple of hours ago because they have started in on the piped-in Christmas muzak. Your song was so sweet and refreshing! I have both the Buffet and Willie K versions, and I gotta agree that yours just may be my fave. You've made it onto my iPod! |

Nice job Dom. You have a great singing voice and your uke(s) sound great too! Are you playing a soprano and a tenor? Sounds like a soprano rhythm during your solo. Did you record vocal and uke at the same time one track with one mic or... how exactly? I have just started doing some recording on my pc and am trying to figure the best way to do it. None of my ukes have pickups so I have to use a mic. Sounds real nice though. |

Toebone, All the tracks are played with my shop made walnut tenor with low G tuning. Willie uses the low G on this one. The track behind the solo probably sounds more like a soprano because of playing softer and by using more of the fingernail on my right index finger.
I recorded all of the uke tracks before adding the vocal. That vocal is about the best I could do without the destraction of playing the instrument. It is much more difficult for me to play and sing at the same time. I should have however, done a scratch track first which included the singing because as it turns out I left out a part after the solo because I didn't have the words to keep me straight. After the solo I should have sang the part about "staying up late like the islanders do". So next time I think I will do a scratch track and then delete it after I get everything else done.
Oh, and I use two Sure SM57 mics on stands. One right in front of the uke and the other off to the right about 3 feet away. I disconnected those during the vocal track and used an SM48 for that. Thanks for your cudos, Dominator |

Yes, very good rendition of this old tune. I especially like the stereo almost-counterpoint ukes during the vocals. Our (Pulelehua and I) favorite version of this tune was Recorded by Leon Redbone in 1987. Leon, being a classic "crooner" in the mold of Bing Crosby, fits this song very well. Dobro accompanyment was provided by Cyndi Cashdollar and Dr. John shows up on the disc as well. The tune/song is Credited to an L. Moraine. Because of this song (perhaps our favorite Christmas song of all), we did research into actually staying on Christmas Island at Christmas!
Turns out that there are TWO Christmas Islands, one not far from Indonesia, which is an Austrailian territory, and another one located between Hawaii and the Marquesas, controlled by the U.S. It is a bird sanctuary and visitors are discouraged and the accomodations are minimal, but it IS POSSIBLE to stay there at Christmas time. I don't think things will happen at Christmas there as they are described in the song, unless Santa wants to get pecked to death by seabirds!
P.S. very nice pict Dusty...

Dusty, Thanks for the picture and thanks to Lawrence for the research work. I wasn't even aware that there was a real "Christmas Island".
Thanks to you to Maggie. I am arranging an instrumental version of Jingle Bells that I hope to record soon. Dominator

Actually the picture isn't really Christmas Island. I took it Christmas of 2000 (actually 12/20/00).
Anyone recognize the location? |
