Dusty, it looks like Hanalei to me (east side of the bay facing the west around sunset time). Wherever it is, I wish i were there (and on that horse, too)!

Hey Dom, please let us know when you have that transcription of Christmas Island on your website. I forwarded your sound clip to my kanikapila buds and said that we definitely need to add this one to our playlist for the holidays! Tried to work out the chords, but failed miserablly (since I hardly ever play my tenor uke and especally in low G). I do have a few measures figured out, but it went downhill from there. Maybe one of my bandmates can take a stab at it too. Anyway, thanks again for sharing the tune. Can't wait to hear your version of Jingle Bells too!

Yes, it's Hanalei Bay at the Pavilion Beach Park, about at the center of the bay's perimeter. The sun had just dropped behind the hills.

Here's a another shot from a few minutes later the same evening.

Hi again Dom. Thanks for the info. I would have responded sooner but I went out for a jog, tore my calf muscle, went to the doctor, and now I'm limping around with a big ol' orthotic boot on my bad leg!

One of the reasons I asked about your recording is that I (like many others) like to play when I record the vocal track. The problem I have is that my uke gets picked up very well - too well - on the vocal mic so I can't separate them for mixing. Not playing while I sing would solve that problem I guess, but maybe I just need to find a better way to place my microphones.

By the way, I have recorded just the uke with two mics pointed sort of diagonally at the sound hole (two separate tracks) and it comes out very nicely. Does having the second mic farther away give it more presence with the time delay?

Uke that 'tude!

TB,
Sorry to hear of your injury. That stinks!

I know what you mean about the bleed over. I was getting some bleed over from the first track being picked up by the mics as it was being played while I recorded the second track. I am no expert about the mic placement. I think I read somewhere that it is supposed to round out the sound a bit by having the second mic a little further away. Who knows.

I recorded an arrangement of Jingle Bells last night that I will post in a bit. Get yourself well.

Maggie, I emailed you regarding the chords for Christmas Island.

Thanks for the sympathy, Dom, but this big ol' boot gives me just the right amount of immobility to excuse myself from some weekend chores in favor of sitting comfortably on the couch with my uke and some new sheet music!

Hi Dom!

Just popped an email to you. If you don't hear from me, please try again or post something to the TP site again. Sorry for the hassle. I'm getting email, so it should work. Please let me know if it doesn't.

Thanks,
Maggie

It's killing me, too, and I live in SoCal. But I also know how warm the water is there. And what the water temp here is. Ah, the days at the East-West Center, when academics and surfing were a very fine mix.

Microphone Bleed,

There are ways to minimize this, but it will cost you.

You can sing into a figure 8 or HyperCardiod mike that is placed
so that the pattern null is pointing at the uke (to minimize bleed
from the Uke). However, if you have a "live" room the mike pattern
approach will not work so well (dead rooms - high damping - are
best).

You can also use "differential close miking". Take two identical
mics (matched ones work even better). Tape or Clamp them together.
Feed them into two channels that are mixed OUT OF PHASE. This way
any common (distant - more that a few inches) signal will cancel
out. Now carefully sing into JUST ONE of the two mikes and that
signal will not be cancelled out. But the vocal recordihg may
sound a little weird and need some careful EQ.

Thanks Mark. I have not heard the version you speak of. I will have to hunt it down to take a listen. I am getting geared up to spend Christmas on Kauai this year. Can't wait.

Dominator,

Here is a link to a free download version of the Leon Redbone
arrangement of which I spoke. I do not know if the Movie
Version is the same, as arrangements in the Movies are often
substantially altered (but it might be the same).

(seems to be a legitimate site)
