I am sure most of you are long time fans here (of slack key) and I have been a Ray Kane fan for 4 years. Wierd I never thought to learn how to play it, and wierder that I never sought out other slack key musicians. Just listened to Ledward's Radio Hula, and I am still looking for my socks! Ledward's arrangement and execution of that song is technically perfect. I am sitting here right now, working through it. Loved it!!!

Led played that song twice during his lecture at George Kahumoku's camp last June. I think he likes playing it as much as we like hearing it.
It's got a hypnotic rhythm and when he plays it, he sways back and forth like a metronome.

Yeah, Jesse, I have never seen another musician that got as much obvious joy out of making music than Led. Even in frigid NY at the end of a long tour, playing the same program over and over again, he would still laugh out loud when he played some phrase that pleased him. To steal (and paraphrase) a line from Mike Ditka's college coach: "God intended Led to be a slack key musician." That kind of joy is infectious, too, thankfully.

PS. Ned is no slouch either, as a soloist, too.

Ho, brah! Led is at the level of playing where he is his own audience. That is, he often surprizes himself. He was playing "Tuberose" at the Ritz concert one time, and, like Julie, most people were hypnotized into this emotionally-loaded cathartic experience, when he played a riff, and broke out laughing, expounding "Ha ha ha ha ha! Found another one!". How can you not like that?

Aloha Mike,
Led's Radio Hula is great, that's what I'm working on now, kinda tricky, but I hope to have down in a few weeks. One of my goals for '05 was to learn this song. You should hear Dusty's version, really smooth nahenahe kine.

I've been trying to learn "Radio Hula" also and I've recorded it on my laptop so I could listen to myself. I find the challenge is that the fretting hand has to move up and down the fretboard in big jumps and the yet the rhythm has to stay rock solid for the overall arrangement to work. Also, it's heavily syncopated, except the bass, and there are musical hooks both on and off the beat. It's a fun workout.
I tried using a metronome to straighten out my timing, but it's just distracting because of all the syncopation going on.

Thanks Rik .
I can't reproduce Led's delightful version (Who can?). So, I just made up different parts - some modeled after other versions; some made up. It's a fun tune to play but I can't play it and talk at the same time.

Jesse, just get those tricky fingerings between the 9th-14th frets, eventully with each repetition, that flow will emerge...at least that's my guess.
Good luck to the both of us. ha ha

After practicing with Mark Hanson's tablature and CD, I went back and relistened to Ledwards version. There is definitely two guitar channels on that track. Mark Hanson gives credit in his tablature as follows:

Arrangement: Ledward Kaapana

However, I think it is Mark's interpretation.

PErsonally, my pan is to work between the two sources until I come up with something I like. BTW, how does Ledward make that picking sound? (not the harmonics)

Its a kind of funky, muted picking sound...does it two or three times during the song.

Do you have the copy that I have off the Hawaian Masters CD?

RE: "picking"
Led often varies his arrangement by muting the strings by the bridge with the side of his picking hand so that the strings take on a quick percussive sound. He also combines that with quick hammering on and/or off of three or four strings and sometimes combined with sliding the whole chord shape. That really makes the song move.

I think he is palm muting with his picking hand, and also timing the fretting of the notes (to achieve staccato) with his fretting hand, but I have never been able to emulate this well. A little delay may also add to the effect.

Maybe you can see what he's doing at Led's Kennedy Center performance, but I just watched Radio Hula and he doesn't play that section here.

RE: Mark Hanson's Transcription. Yep, it's his interpretation -- just like every time Led plays it, it's his interpretation.

The point being it ain't ever the same way twice. The purpose of a transcription is to help the learner, not to set a piece in stone.

For the record, Hal Kinnamon has also TABed it out, and it's slightly different yet.

All of which is to say - "Jus' Press!"

cheers,

Mark
