I am trying to express my FIRST reaction to Led's Radio Hula. First, it blew me away...surely has a swing beat, maybe even a waltzy kind of thing going on? Is that too far out there? Aunty Nancy, I have since heard several other versions of Radio Hula, some with words, and I guess I am not sensitive enough to make the connection to Led's version!
slkho, I have gotten through the first part (not the intro, start at measure 15, that whole page). But, the rest appears to be variations on that, so I am hopeful.

Ditto Mike, I think I'm at the same place on R-Hula. Would like to have page 1 & 2 down pat by this afternoon and start tackling p.3 A couple of times it all came together and sounded so cool. Can't wait to have it all down one day. Keep those beers chilled!! On my tab's, it also shows the chords, and although I know all the chords in taropatch G, I still can't figure out how they're executed. So I'm comitted to trying to memorize the whole song as tabbed. Its a slow process. How are you doing it? I too, have heard it played in so many different variations, they all sound so cool. Ledward's sister, Lehua has a great version on her CD, as well as, Justins lullaby...check it out. Once you it have down, then you can start making the song your own. You should hear Dusty's version, simply awesome. -slkho |

Practice and listen to as many versions as you can - as many times as you can. |

Well, I have it on my i-Pod (Hanson's version) and I spend half of my time playing with the i-Pod, then just by myself. The i-Pod helps with timing, tone, beat and so on. I saw some links about software for slowing down and all of that...perhaps I will persue that. As for now, music scores and tabs work well.

Well, slkho,
How goes the effort?
I have the last page and 1/2 to learn. My iPOd went on the fritz...just got it back from Apple. I tried playing the music on my computer, and that worked OK, but not near as easy as the iPod. So, its off to the last page and 1/2. Didn't somebody else say they were learning this song?

I think there's going to be a very learnable version on the new "Slack Tracks"

Yeah, that is what I gathered. Looking forward the "Tracks" release. I do hope these are not watered down versions.

I'll beat Don to the punch here. The leads for the Slack Tracks songs were all recorded by Partick. WRT Radio Hula, adding the steel guitar, the uke and the base produce, in my humble opinion, one of the best versions of this tune that I've heard, including Led's. While they don't have exotic intros and deliberately aren't as complex as the originals, the learnable parts are pretty true to the spirits of the songs. This will be particularly noticable for Punahele and Opihi Moe Moe as well. As a novice, I think this version of Radio Hula will be straightforward. |

Aloha Mike, progressing pretty steadily, just finishing up on p.4 Sounds rough, but I know where to go on the frets. I'm anticipating getting it all done by mid-March? Recently, me & Dusty did a public gig. His version of R-hula not only moitivated me, but reminded me how far to go. Yikes!!! ...baby steps, baby steps....like Helen Keller doing Pilates. -slkho |

slkho,
I take it you mean page 4 of Hanson's tabs for Radio Hula?
The part mixing low fret picking with high fret harmonics? Ouch! Sprained my pinky... but datsz OK...lots of fun e komo mai! (hope that means friend of mine!!)
Mid March? Cool. I should have my Taylor 810 (with a pickup) back from the recondition shop...will try to record and upload to that clickplay.com (or whatever it is) website. How 'bout you?
Lets do it by April 1.

My version of Radio Hula is not Led's version. It's far from it. To play his version (or anyone else's version of a tune) only invites comparison. As I said before, listen to as many people playing Radio Hula (or any other tune), look for ideas/inspiration. Listen to them MANY times, then make it your own. I'm still learning and I play it differently every time. My main focus is on the rhythm & groove of the tune. |

I know Dusty, just giving you props. Your version, (although not Led's) does motivate & inspire me, its wonderfully played. Mike, yes page 4 of Hanson's book. I think April 1st is do-able, lets go for it. Now that the end is getting within sight, its getting exciting. That last page and a quarter may prove to be the toughest portion I think. Yeah that low fret picking with the high fret harmonics is a little wierd sounding. Going from the G, to a D7 turnaround to just tapping on the 12th fret once and then back again doesn't seem fluid. It all sounds rough, but with time & repetition, it will eventually flow. pau, -slkho |
