This is an album I wouldn't have purchased if it weren't for the guys at Sun Jose Hawaii "encouraging" me to buy it. Not buying it would missing this album be a mistake. (Album and artist, same name.) This disk is filled with absolutely delicious singing, very nahenahe, often close to hula roots. Straight from the heart. Natalie is a former Miss Aloha Hula and now a Kumu on Oahu. This is her first recording, and quite an acomplishment for a first recording. If you like Darlene Ahuna or Lei'ohu Ryder, you'll love Natalie. A real treat for me were the duets with Howard Ai on Frank K. Hewett's "Aloha Hawai'i Ku'u One Hanau," and with Tai Ai on "Latitu." Not slack key, but a real treat.

Thanks Raymond for the recommendation. I just heard the clips from this cd on Mele.com. Wow! Gonna melt down my credit card some more.

Natalie's been a secret musical treasure here in the islands for years, singing with her dad for her parents' hula school (Halau Hula Olana). You can also hear her on the halau's 2002 CD: http://www.mele.com/v3/info/2260.htm
The keiki of this halau are extraordinary -- see them, if you ever get the opportunity! |
