Right now I'm listening to the new Hana Ola compilation of Andy Cumming's Hawaiian Serenaders records from the 40s and 50s, produced and annotated by Harry B. Soria, Jr. Gabby played steel and slack key in this band, and a lot of his later repertory is rooted here ("Lei Ohu," "Kauai Beauty," "Mauna Loa," "Alekoki," "Wahine `Ui")--and you can also hear one of the sources of the swing feel that shows up in his later work. Really interesting stuff.

Russell,

I got that album as a gift about a month ago. Very sweet. What a great perspective on where the music was and where it is now. Really some great old tunes.
