Rice Bag BVD's: In the Filipino tradition of saving everything, my Lola, who helped raise us kids in a plantation town, used to make underwear out of the empty rice bags. We would have to wear that, after she scrubbed us with the brown bristle brush in the tub outside. Very humble beginnings. And to this day, I have no room to save anything! Old traditions die hard.
Hope to meet you some day, too. We can kanakapila, talk story and laugh. Here's to Horticultural Remedies!

Kiwini:
Patrick's a great teacher, and very well worth the drive to go and take lessons. Lucky--you folks in the Bay Area to have him! With slack key in such abundance down there, one doesn't need too much horticultural therapy, yah?

I suppose you're right! If ki ho alu isn't therapy enough then I don't know. But I'm sure there a place for the horticultural remedies too. |

Thanks for the information. I'll look him up. I've seen him perform on several occasions out and about the Bay Area.
Thanks again, Steve |

Kiwini, without knowing you were even in the competiion you have just won the class clown award. Haven't figured out what you will get from that, except perhaps a unanimous decision. This, of course, will get you nowhere, so better keep your day job Where is your garlic capital, anyway? Ours is Geraldos Restaurant on College road. You wanna get a date BEFORE you go there! |

Karl, My day job is actually getting me nowhere, so humor has become my drug of choice!
But for reals, I do study comedy and have performed stand-up comedy at the Improv and other comedy clubs like Rooster T. Feathers Comedy Club (imagine that, a Filipino and a Rooster on the same stage! Place your bets!). I got involved with stand-up as a way to improve my public speaking skills, so I enrolled in the San Francisco Comedy College and the rest is, well, not quite history, but I hope to someday use comedy if I ever do get on stage with my guitar. I admire musicians that bring comedy into their performances. There are many good ones out there but my favorite has to be Jerome Koko of Makaha Sons.
Humor has been a natural extension of growing up Hawaiian. I can hardly remember a time when I wasn’t steeped in island humor (well, except when I was getting a good spanking or in church). But since the song, “Mr. San Cho Lee” came out, it gave me a freedom to use humor. If you haven’t heard it, here’s a link to the words of the song. I want to say that Andy Bumatai wrote and performed this song but I’m not sure. You almost have to listen to it to really enjoy it, but the words tell a great story none-the-less. It does explain Hawaiian Humor to some degree. Does anyone out there know who wrote it, performed it, or where it can be found? ,

On a serious note, in studying various comedic applications it is interesting to note that many sociologists see humor as one way to counter-balance racism. It is built on the premise that through humor, we can begin to understand our cultural differences. Understanding these cultural variances allow us to begin the process of accepting and embracing these differences that seems to keep cultures at arms length. If we avoid understanding, we continue to perpetuate the misunderstandings, misconceptions, fears and continue to build walls. This fundamental belief is what has given rise to black comedy over the years. Richard Pryor, the father of black comedy, was quoted as saying that among other personal reasons, creating cultural awareness was one of his driving motivations for his work. Racism is still a big problem for this country but in Hawaii, the greatest melting pot in the world, we have somehow learned to deal with it seemingly better than most. I wonder how much truth of that lies in the lyrics of the song. Ok, off the serious note.
My parents have always taught me to say “Thank-You” if ever someone gives you Comedy Award. So Karl,
On behalf of the San Fransisco Comedy College, my Comedy Kumu, Kurtis Mathis, (expensive but darn well worth it), My beautiful wife in her beautiful asylum-white robe who always said that I drive her nuts, My children, who, for some unexplained reason just got up and left one day, my dog Kona for staying only coz the kids forgot to take her, I would like to say:
Thank you God, for giving me the ability to laugh at myself. Thank you to all my worthy fellow nominees, I’m sorry I’m so whacko, but no can help. Thank you to Karl Monetti and the Class Clown Academy for this Bozo Award. I would also like to thank Mr San Cho Lee for the dried up lychee. Thanks to Conrad Jones for the tickets to the Community Swimming Pool. Thank you to Kazuo Tanaka for the pictures of Me and Mrs, Mrs. Jones. Thank you to Miss Momilomilomi for the wonderful experience. Thanks to Mr. Conception for the Chicken Adobo. And to you Mr. Kamakawiwo’ole, thanks for Nothin yah?. (eh, no huhu, I not talkin bout Bruddah Iz. Read da lyrics)
If I may close on a serious note, I know that my humor can sometimes wear thin on others, maybe offend others and sometime I apply it inappropriately. I have read through many postings and threads of this wonderful website and have come to realize that all of you treat this website with the utmost respect for the culture, the art of Kiho’alu, and for one another. It is apparent to me that I am amongst a community of highly talented, well educated, well meaning and well connected group. I am new to this cyber stuff and I don’t know what proper etiquette is so please, if there is something I need to know, please email me. I take criticism well. I just don’t want to inadvertently make a mockery out of the heart and soul that has gone into this site. I’ve made an attempt to clean up some of my postings realizing that unlike personal emails, these postings are publicly archived records. I have done so out of respect for the integrity of this website and its members. I had to leave some stuff otherwise the subsequent reply’s would have made no sense at all. If I have inadvertently offended anyone in any way, shape, or form, I truly apologize.
I could say that I don’t care what you think, but I do.
Respectfully, Steve
I’m sorry for this lengthy response. Did I mention that I’m part Portagee?
By the way Karl, I live in Gilroy, CA. We are 30 miles of San Jose, home of the Big Dog, Ilio Nui. Gilroy is called the Garlic Capital of the World because of the quantity of garlic that we supply the world with. Our town motto is "Drive a Little and Smell Alot" Check your supermarket for fresh and bottled garlic chances are, it came from Christopher Ranch here in town. For the past 15 or so years we have held our annual Garlic Festival that draws over 100,000 over the weekend and at its peak drew 150,000. Ask anyone if they know where the Garlic Capital is and see if they know. If you ever come down this way, I'll take you. It is a must see. Garlic foods, garlic wine even garlic ice cream! You won't need a silver cross around here!
Geraldo’s, isn’t that the pizza parlor with the green canopy? I know they’re a little on the pricy side but that it’s all homemade stuff. How do I know about the place? Why Santa told me.
