We have a couple of bargain resort packages and some airline miles and are trying to put together a trip. We have 5 days on Kauai and 5 days on O`ahu. Any suggestions for great events in the coming year?

Thanks,
Fran

Fran, I'd suggest timing around any of the Slack Key Festivals. Lots of music on Kaua`i. Check out Leilani Bond (not slack, but a great performer) at the Hyatt in Poipu; Doug and Sandy McMasters in Hanalei; also Cindy Coombs. Dusty knows the music scene there very well. If you want other Kaua`i info email me or Dusty for eats, places to stay, activities, etc.

The 2005 Slack Key Festivals have been announced as follows:

6/26 - Maui (Kahului)
7/17 - Moloka`i (Kaunakakai)
8/21 - O`ahu (Waikiki)
9/24 - Hawai`i (Waikoloa)
11/20 - Kaua`i (Lihu`e)

And there's also this one -- formerly just slack key, but now expanded to include `ukulele:

Sat, Jul 16, 12 Noon
Big Island Music Festival
Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium
Hilo, HI
Tickets:
call (808) 935-9085 -or- (808) 961-5711

Don't forget Led Kaapana's big "Acoustic Workshop" August 17-20 on O`ahu:

Not purely slack key, but always a monster Hawaiian music event, is the annual Makaha Sons (and talented friends) concert -- now back at the Waikiki Shell (June 11). Guest musicians announced thus far include Raiatea Helm, Ho`okena, Keali`i Reichel...with more to be added.

In addition to those Terry mentioned, you will want to catch Ken Emerson at the Princeville hotel and Pancho Graham at the Lighthouse cafe in Kilauea. Cindy performs at the Hanapepe cafe on Friday night (reservations are an absolute must - call for them a week or two in advance: 808-335-5011).
