I feel like the "Lonely Little Petunia in an Onion Patch" here in the rural eastern foothills of Northern California. Is there anyone nearby who'd like to get together to play? I'm an ukulele person, but I'd love to find anyone playing slack key/Hawaiian nearby...

Hi Tonya! I sure wish folks would put their town on the bio's, but most don't. However, I just went to 'members' (little letters, top right) and then sorted on State, and then started to look through the California listings because I thought I'd seen one from Chico. I realized I don't know where a lot of places are, but figured you would know if they're close. If you sort that way, go to page 31 and you'll find another listing in Paradise! Good luck and have fun. aloha n |

Thank you, thank you Auntie Nancy! I cringe to admit I'd never realized it could be sorted by any of those top headers, e.g. "state." But now I've done it and already have an e-mail off to the one I found in Paradise. 'Still trying to spot others, too. I'm going to find someone to play with yet (unless they figure out ahead of time I'm a five-chord wonder)... |

Aloha Tonya, I'm glad I could help. Now I remember (I think). I think there will be or was a Keola Beamer and Carlos Nakai concert in Chico - maybe it won't be sold out up there - and if there's an opportunity, maybe ask around for interest in kanikapila/slack key - whatevah. And you DO know that when you travel, just send us messages ahead either here in the 'patch, or direct e-mail and we try to put something together. I think this is the weekend that Gordon Burt was going up to the San Jose area. A couple weeks ago we had a terrific kanikapila w/ Jesse Tinsley and family - hapakid - from Coeure d'Laine. When Andy came out to San Diego, we all got together at Terry's house - Chunkey Monkey, and Jerry S.... came down from Sac - or close somewhere. so you'll find folks, hang in there!! 5 chords in the same key are more than enough. Do Ukes use capos? And besides, haven't been to anyplace yet where mini-lessons of all sorts took place (at mine, Nick the Pilot gave C-Patch's daughter Rachel a piano lesson!) Most important, you keep having fun! Come on down when you see something fun is going on - like workshop or concert - auntie n |

What a friendly explanation and invitation; thank you. Now I just have to be brave enough to meet new people and share my (lack of!) great skills. I can imagine it would be really fun, though, and that would take away the nervousness quickly.
I'll be in San Jose/Hayward on April 23/24 for the Northern California Ukulele Festival. I was planning on heading to The Hukilau (San Jose) on Saturday night to listen to Bryan Tolentino--unless anyone knows of anything else happening? I have to leave Hayward at 4 pm on Sunday to get back home for work. But I'm looking forward to at least hearing some great Hawaiian sounds that weekend.
Jake Shimabukuro was in Chico in November--but I was on the Big Island then for the Slack Key/Ukulele Festival at Waimea, which was even nicer than seeing Jake in person! Besides, I really like the more Hawaiian sounds and nahenahe music and there was plenty of that on the Big Island. |

I hope you're reading all the threads here because that's the week Kevin Brown will be up there. There's a LOT going on. I hope those folks are reading this, and if not, post another one titled w/ area and dates - my guess is that you'll wish you didn't have to go to work. and the other thing... everyone on this site that I have seen and/or heard of is really really nice. I think you'd feel at home and safe by invitations because a lot of folks know each other already - it's not like coming out of nowhere. So welcome to our ohana!! auntie |

Hi, Tonya Butte County is close to Shasta County, and there doesn't seem to be much company for a beginning slacker here either. George Kahumoku had a few people at a workshop in Chico several years ago, as well as some interested people in Mt. Shasta for a workshop up there. However, I haven't heard of anything lately.
Keola's concert is May 12 at Laxon Auditorium. Maybe there might be an opportunity to see if anyone there is interested. Whatever business you can get started, I'm interested.

Aloha Tonya,
Kevin Brown and his son Ikaika and daughter Ka`ena will be playing Saturday night(23rd) in Santa Rosa at 8 PM, along with Patrick Landeza, and some local hula dancers, so it's just an hour North if you're staying in S.F., maybe not so attractive if you're in the East or South Bay though. Sure to be a wonderful show, though a workshop with Kamaka and Tolentino sounds pretty good too. I know of someone along the way who might enjoy a passenger for the carpool too if you decide to come up; Auntie 'C' girl, you there?
