I am starting to think about attending these two events this year. They seem like a good place to show off my http://www.konawalkingstick.com bass. So I thought I would put it out there and see if any of you will be attending either of these events, and what your impression is of them (if you have been to them before). Southern Cal Uke Festival: http://www.ukulelefestival.org/

The Santa Cruz Festival has grown considerably since it's inception -- which was two vendors, one local halau and their musicians, and LOTS of fog and wind!
The space for vendors is constrained by the surrounding buildings, so that can't have grown much larger than when we last saw it (2002) -- there were about 20 vendors or so. Because the area is so small, it feels like there are thousands of attendees, but it's actually more like a few hundred or so.
The Festival itself starts late morning, runs about 3-4 hours. For the first few years, entertainment was provided by Dancing Cat Records, who brought many of the islands' slack key masters (wu-huuuuuuu!). Dancing Cat no longer sponsors concerts, but there is always hula and music provided by local talent.
You can email the wharf office for details about booth rental fees, etc.: wharf @ ci.santa-cruz.ca.us |

We have been to the last two so. cal. uke festivals. They are quite well attended and have a lot of ukulele workshops covering a wide variety of styles. There are, also beginning and intermediate slack key guitar workshops. A lot of instrument vendors and other hawaiiana vendors come; also some good food booths. It's in Cerritos, just northeast of Long Beach. It, however, is just a one day festival. |
