Aloha all,
I'm still relatively new to slack and although that all I've been listening to, I have a sense of who I think is amazing and who I just like. So, I started thinking it would be interesting to see what others taro patchers considered to be the essential CDs that you would take with you if you were going to be stuck on a deserted island. I guess out of time and space we should limit it to 10 CD's...I'm sure there are people who could name a whole library.
For example, my favorites include (in no particular order):
1. Led Kaapana: Led Live (I love listening to this CD. He's amazing.)
2. Ray Kane: Punahele (Ray really has the style down. It is truly nahenahe.)
3. Leonard Kwan: Ke'ala's Mele (I think he's style of playing is just beautiful, like George Winston says, his thumb is one of the wonders of the world).
4. Leonard Kwan. The Red album, although electric with accompaniment, it's still great. His version of Sase is my favorite.
5. John Keawe: Mana`olana. ( I love his version of Opihi Moemoe. His guitar just sounds great.)
6. Keola Beamer. Ki'hoalu DVD. I have Soliquy (which I like) and Mahalo Hou (which is great), but I love watching and hearing him play the stuff with the guitar slap, scratching the strings, etc. It is just captivating. I'm not sure which of those tunes and I know some say his others are his best I just haven't heard them yet.
7. Gabby Pahuniu: Gabby. This album is great..the emotions in his voice, the playing is incredible.
8. Ozzie Kotani: To honor a Queen. This is really a beatufil album through and through.
9. Dancing Cat collection of Hawaiian Slack Key Masters Vol 1. I love every track on this album. This is where it all began for me.
10.?. Hard choice for the last one.
I know I haven't heard many great album and would love to hear from others what they consider to be the best of the best.

| Looks like your off to a great start, i really enjoy the Hui Aloha CD (theres only one) with Dennis & David Kamakahi, George Kuo & Martin Pahinui. |

... anything by gabby. it took me longer to really appreciate his music, but now i turn to it for inspiration. there's so much going on behind those simple recordings. dennis kamakahi's pua`ena is another source of inspiration for me. the guitar playing is not complex, but it's perfect.
give a listen to ry cooder's version of isa lei, from the movie dead man walking. you can purchase it for 99c from the iTunes music store. i like it because, by doing a polynesian song in such a different way, you learn a lot about what makes a song "hawaiian".

Thanks for your replies. I was thinking Ki ho'alu more than other forms of music, although I would strongly agree with the Radiohead, Bach,Iron Butterfly and the Leo Kottke (especial one guitar, no vocals) recommendations.
I'm downloading the ry cooder song as we speak, and I'll have to check out the others. In particulary, Dennis kamakahi's has always interested me since he took over the esteemed guitar position in the Son's of Hawaii (I haven't heard any of their music and would plan to check some out when Gabby, Sonny, George and Kuo and Dennis Kamakahi were playing with them if anyone has some recommendations. I also like Moses Kahumoku song on the Dancing Cat Masters album so I'll have to check out the black album cover.

BTW the out of print CD's (Seattle style and Tradition) look great. I'll have to keep my open on Ebay for them. |

Although maybe not slack key per se, I would also include Iz and Keali'i Reichel - they play and sing many of my very favorites - maybe I can learn them ki ho'alu on guitar...
And ditto big dog - Ozzie's "to honor a queen" has to be there.

I would stick with the classics of slack key and Hawaiian music in general.
1. Something by Gabby and/or Sons of Hawaii - "Hi'ilawe" and "Pua Alani" are great songs.
2. A compilation of Hui 'Ohana with vocals by Dennis, Led and Nedward.
3. "Facing Future" by Iz - His albums were eclectic, but this one is a demonstration of his art.
4. Maunalua (either album) - My favorite falsetto/slack key combination of any era
5. Any Amy/Willie K album - favorite female falsetto of any era plus arrangements by the master of stringed instruments
6. Hui Aloha album - a college course on the concept of "slack key band"
7. Ho'opi'i Brothers - Na Mele Henoheno - Great falsetto in the old style
8. Ka'au Crater Boys - Valley Style - Their best album is full of great jam-style guitar/uke music. Troy Fernandez is da man!
9. Keali'i Reichel - Kawaipunahele - Keali'i's albums are filled with contemporary Hawaiian music, plus strange combinations of R&B covers, but it's all done with a Hawaiian sensibility.
10. Olomana - Enduring Pride - Jerry and Haunani have recorded so many memorable songs it would be hard to choose.
Left off this list are greats like Kapena, Makaha Sons, Brothers Caz, Sean Na'auao, Pure Heart, any of the Pahinui or Beamer brothers. I'd say if I was stuck on a desert isle, I'd have to take an iPod.

Aloha,
I guess if I was on a desert island, there would be no electricity? I'd pack my guitar and a case of strings.
But if I could play CD's they'd be anything from:
