Aloha All!
It's just me! Slackkey Bill! Yesterday afternoon (Sept. 1, 2002) Myself, Keith and Susie got together for a "Kiho'alu Jam Session" at their place along the Kaanapali Hillside. The view from up there is awesome! Anyways, we had a great time with my version of Lahainaluna. I also showed, and taught him my favorite turn-arounds. We even enjoyed some two-part Kiho'alu Harmonies throughout our Jam Session. It's amazing the kinds of Harmony two people can create with "Kiho'alu Stylings".
Then Keith shared with me his version of "Pearly Shells", and....."Keith! What was that other one? I forgot!" Wish all you could've been with us having a great time "Kiho'alu Styling. Other songs we did together was: Ua Noho Wau A Kupa,(in Taro-patch), and Kamakani Ka'ili Aloha (in C-tuning). During these two songs I sang. Well, tried to!
Just wanted to share this with all of you, and I'm sure Keith will as well. Andy! Sarah! Reid! Kawika! Popoki! Pauline!, and all the rest....Take care, God Bless, Good Health and Prosperity! But above all else! Don't forget to JUS'PRESS!!!!!! A Hui Hou!
slackkey Bill P.S. The Waihee "kanikajammapila Session" moved back to the 1st. Wednesday and Saturday of this month. So! If your here, it's this coming Wednesday the 4th 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. Laters!

Aloha, Slack Key Bill,
Is your Lahainaluna in taropatch or drop C (or something else?) It's my wife's favorite hapa haole song and so far my arrangement is pretty weak. Do you have a recording of your version? Who influenced your arrangement?
They say Maui no ka oe, and I sure do agree, Fran

Aloha Fran and Pauline!
Pauline it's great to be hearing from you too! My version of Lahainaluna in done in Taro-patch. As far as what chords and stuff.....I dunno! I jus'press! But Keith can tell you the arragements! I never learned different chords or read tabs (wish I did!) My "Kiho'alu Stylings" are all by watching. But mostly by ear. I listen to a favorite song, then I figure it out after. All I need to do, is remember the melody. Be it humming the song or playing it over and over in my head. From there I would come up with several ways to play the song. But so far the way I showed Keith is my favorite. If you happen to cross paths with Keith, you can ask him to show you and Pauline.
Yes, I do have a non-professional recording of myself and my "Kiho'alu Stylings". It was something I decided to do for our Family Reunion about a year ago. Maybe one of these days I'll try to do a "wave-file recording" of my version of Lahainaluna so I could sent it to you and Pauline to listen to. Well, it's time to hit the sack! The time right now, and the day is 2:35 Monday morning Hawaii time. Ca'tcha both laters! A Hui Hou!

Hey slackkey,
Really, that was an indirect way to say it would be great to meet you some day. A recording would be a pale substitute, but how about putting an mp3 up on hawaiimusicians.com? They seem to have the space and bandwidth for member mp3's.

Good Maui Morning to you Pauline!
As a matter of fact, the Admin. from HawaiiMusicians.com is in the process of placing my recording on Mp3 there. He'll get aoround to it as soon as he has time. Being that I'm so computer-illiterate, I asked if he could do it for me. Wave-files I am very familiar with it. But you're right! It does not come-out clear. Unless of course, I do it late at night, or early in the morning while the Family's sound asleep, and there are no background noises. I've done a few in the past, and they came out not too 'shabby! Before my old hardrive crashed, I had Lahainaluna saved on file so I could send it out to be listened to. But like I said, that was before my old computer hardrive crashed. Back to the recording board! Hey! Keep in touch okay! And I'll do the same. Aloha!

hi bill, we're back on the really big island now, it's time to go back to work. it was great having you over to jam. if andy, reid, and the others make it over to maui for the next slack key festival, maybe we can all meet at our place for a kanikapila...
fran, bill's version of lahainaluna intros with a G9 chord: 000200. i'm using the pick pattern 2-3-4-6-5-4-6-5 (numbering the strings from lowest in pitch to highest), but bill puts a brush into it. you then start the song, playing the melody and keeping a kind of rhumba bass line going (bill's bass lines are beautiful and rather complex). the first chord, G, you play open, and the second chord, C, you bar at the fifth fret. the third chord, G, is 000789, which you slide into and then go to an open G.
that G9 is a pretty chord. bill also likes the same form at the fifth fret for C9, and ended the song with a descending sequence, umm, correct me if i'm wrong, bill, C9 - Bb9 - Ab9 - G9 (same form at fret 5, 3, 1, 0).
aloha, keith

Aloha, Keith,
Mahalo for the sketch of Bill's piece.
Is the bass similar to the "Spanish" bass in Sonny Chillingworth's "Moe Uhane?" That's the feel I get from the Makaha Sons version, and it's another frustration, because I've learned a couple of pieces with that bass line but it drives me nuts to try to figure out an arrangement over that bass.

So are you two handsome dudes flashing gang signs?
What's a shaka?
I like those Hawaiian style quilts on the wall. Purchased or do you know someone talented?

hi pauline,
those gang signs are shakas: http://www.aloha-hawaii.com/pidgin/shaka.gif. you see it all the time. last week, a gas station attendent indicated approval (of us moving up to the forward pump) by doing a shaka on each hand, holding his arms pretty much straight down, bent a bit at the elbows, and a bit in front, and them pumped them each once while snapping his wrists back and forth twice.
i read somewhere that the shaka started by kids imitating a honolulu storekeeper who had lost his two middle fingers. he'd wave at kids who were giving him a hard time, trying to get them to scat, and the kids started mimiking him (who knows if it's true?)
my wife has made some hawaiian quilts, but not those on the wall; we got them in hawaii. i've done piecework quilts, but that applique and hand quilting is amazing... how a tropical place ever became popular for quilting is beyond me.

Aloha e Keith,
Those shaka pix are great - from the series "Pidgin to the Max" (Folks - get them if you can; great fun). You are right; there are many versions of how shaka arose. The most common (and belivable) one is that a cane worker sliced off his middle 3 fingers with a cane knife and would then wave to his friends with his maimed hand.
The kids on our block in Hamden, CT started doing this as a surfer thing a year ago (Yo, surfer-dude), but I told them it was a Shaka, and explained the wider signifcance. And, now whenever we see them, playing street hockey, or whatever, we give each other the sign and everybody smiles. Hawai`i in CT. Gotta love it.

Aloha Everyone!
Keith! I'm glad you and Susie had a nice and safe flight back home to the very "BIG ISLAND"! Hey! I guess I didn't break the camera huh! Ha! ha! ha! That is a really great photo-shot of us in yours and Susie's Hale!
Hey Pauline! Now you have a face to go with my postings here. About that recording that I did....It contains only 6 songs: Aloha Ka Manini, Kalena Kai, Na Pua Ka Ilima, Kaulana Na Pua and Makee Ailana. These were done with vocals. The 6th one is Kalena Kai w/ no vocals.
I play all the instruments: slack key guitar, back-up slack key guitar, bass-line, 6-string Kamaka Lili'u and a kamaka Tenor ukulele. The next project I plan to do will probably have all "Back-Yard Kiho'alu Stylings" with no vocals.
Fran! Have you tried my version of "Lahainaluna"? Keith! Wow that's really impressive how you figured it all out! Remember....keep it simple.....relax.....and JUS'PRESS!!!!!!!
Popoki! The Saturday Kanikajammapila Session will be the 21st. I beleive that's the 3rd saturday. It'll start at 10:00 in the morning and will go until I think Kevin said 1:00 P.M. Hope ta see you and Kawika! Pekelo may show-up too! A Hui Hou!
Reid! Wassssssup! Please give my Aloha to Sarah! Yikes! It's already 1:00 a.m. in the morning Hawaii time! Better go to bed! I only have 4 hours left to sleep I get up at 5:00 a.m.! Ca'tcha all laters! A Hui Hou!
