at least Rik has a nice guitar... And I'm impressed with you Dusty, having arms long enough to play that monster neck! n |

It's my Pete Seeger long neck guitar - 43 frets clear of the body. |

i don't know... my arms are too short to get around that bout...
one thing about standing versus sitting - i find it easier to sing if i'm standing. at least, i find it easier to breathe with my diaphram. perhaps if i know what i was doing this wouldn't be an issue?

Aloha, Eric, My preference is to perform while standing. I believe you can exude more energy that way - and performing Slack Key in Buffalo, where people have been conditioned by acoustic guitarists that can strum the heck of the thing, and where they expect a "good" guitarist to play fast - I need to do anything I can to exude energy. I don't walk around, like someone mentioned Led does, but I can sway and dip a little (in a natural, unforced way). So since I perform that way, I also spend a lot of my practice time standing up.
Keith (Aloha, Keith!) is correct about breathing and singing better while standing. And with that in mind, I also hold the guitar up higher than the average acoustic guitarist. This brings your axe closer to your face, like it is when you're sitting, but you're not quite as hunched over (bad for singing).
But hey, as someone else mentioned - Keola always sits. It's probably most important for you to be comfortable and present the kind of program that you want to present. Well, those are my thoughts. Have a good time!

I like to sit when I play, I can hear the guitar better. I'd rather "jam" than "perform" anyway.

"SITTING or STANDING"?
When sitting down and playing, one can really feel the finger positions with comfort and ease...really put Heartful feelings into his or her stylings....nahenahe.
Standing and playing can at times be challenging, and at times, finding the proper finger placements to a "kanikajam" a little difficult to feel on your guitar strings.. But it's also fun and good for the circulation!
Slackkey Bill P.S. Guitar Straps are a great comfort when standing... |

Aloha e Billy P!
Great to see your posting! How's things??
Yep, I'd need a strap definitely if I played while standing. I never have, though, except momentarily with my foot up on a stool so my guitar is on my raised leg. Does anyone use that position regularly?
I agree with Keith, singing is better standing up, but I've never done that either because I sit down to play... However, I make a point of sitting up straight.

Sit, stand, walk around? Hey...I tried to mimick those guitarist that walk around on stage while playing solos yesterday at the luau. Made a lot of mistakes while on the move, mostly squeaks and dead notes due to the guitar moving. I could hear the crowd react as I momentarily paused quickly focusing on my finger positions and my guitar chord's snake like movements behind me. It was new, it was fun but I will never do it again without practicing. |

You know what I really can't stand?!
All this discussion about sitting!
Any minute and I'm a gonna walk right outta here!
(at least my boots are made for it)
(for piffle)
Seriously, my favorite guitarists all sit down: Leo Kottke, Andres Segovia, Mark O'Connor (when he plays seriously), etc. etc. (I never seen a classical player play standing- probably would be booed off the stage ) But the singing thing is definitely true and the best way to sing is standing. So here is what you do: Get someone else to play rhythm, sing standing, and then sit down to pa'ani. It would keep the audience's eyes moving at the very least! Or go all the way and do what David Byrne and the Talking Heads did, which was to play while running! ("Stop Making Sense" tour)
