Hey to anyone out there, I have a mystery. I have this Taylor case I use for my Takamine 6-sting. Recently I've noticed a series of small scuff's on the lower third, backside of my guitar. At first I thought I may have rubbed my guitar against some part of my clothing that inadvertantly did this, but this is not the case. Next I thought it might be ther guitar stand but the hieght and width of these scuffs are not consistant with the stand. I checked the pile lining to the case to see if there may be something that might cause this, and still nothing. Desprate, I lined my case with a soft cotton t-shirt that would be between the case lining and the guitar....I'm still getting these scuffs!! I called the guitar shop where I bought it, and their mystified as well. My only guess is that the fit is so tight, any movement of the case simply causes rubbing contact, (ie scuffs) I afraid I'm going to have to get them professional buffed out. Has anyone experienced this?, any guesses of what it may be? Any preventative solutions? Yikes! -slkho

In the realm of guesses -
Pocket contents? Frank Ford shows an example of a key(s on a key ring) crack, but I think it is on the side of the guitar.
Grit in your case? I got sand blown in one time. Aaarrrgh! Maybe your cat likes the case. You could vacuum it. |

I've had to remove sequins and beads from tees, but I don't think that applies, LOL. |

Must be IPU dust. Keep your guitar out of the garage.
-btw- I put Linseed Oil on my new ipu heke -- looks good but not shiny all the way around. Do I need to let it dry and do another coat? |

PL, sorry no sequins, although the idea of a rhinestone cowboy does appeal to me.
MIKAELE, nope no Ipu dust, although it would act as good humidifier. Linseed oil does not produce a shine, just a coating to prevent the Ipu from drying, and giving it a good organic color...sort of like furniture polish. If you like, I can spar varnish it for you but the oil needs to dry up first. BTW, your instructional CD is great.
SLACKKEYMIKE, I would never know about "small" belt buckles. BTW, that Ray Kane title your were trying to figure the translation to. On his Punahele CD insert, one of the translations is "the expression of your face in pleasure" ... I imagine he meant while playing music???
C-MONK, darn those little Menehune's!! I was wondering where all those footprints where coming from. ha-ha? Here I was thinking my playing would keep them away. -scuffed slkho

My guess is that the dog has learned how to open the case, flip the guitar completely over 360 degrees and relatch the case, just for fun. Don't be too hard on him...the scratches aren't intentional. Give him more attention and the problem will go away. |
Craig My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can. |

Craig!!! are you back with us in the slack key world buddy? Are you going to be playing? Zoom hasn't figured out the case latches, but he keeps stealing all my Sonny Chillingsworth CD's. I always get them back covered in slobber. Any idea to my problem? -slkho |

Clean the CDs with an ammonia based window cleaner - he won't like the NEW smell.

I sticking with my original theory. Belt buckle... button on your blue jeans, or buttons on your shirt. Seen it before.

If I *must* be serious for a moment: Takamines have a cured, cross-linked polyurethane coating on them. You could drive a tank across a cured polyurethane finish and not show tread marks. Our house's red oak flooring has had that on it for 17 years and not a single scratch has ever appeared. (Never wax it neither.) Polyurethane is also extraordinarily slippery, so you can't catch any protrusion on it and *nothing* sticks to it. Almost nothing reacts chemically with it. The clear-coat on my toy car is cured polyurethane and only in the last few years (of about 25 years) has sand kick-up started to abrade the rocker panels. Polyurethane is what is on most speed boat finishes, most long haul truck finishes and DuPont has worked hard to get it right over the last 40-50 years.
Something baaad is happening.
