On one trip to Kauai, near Honalei Bay (sp??), I was told the story of Puff the Magic Dragon. Seems the the Na-Pali mountain range on the far side of the bay was the dragon, the clouds were the dragon smoke and so on. Nice story, and the mention of Honalei in the song seems to make sense. I searched on the web, and found references to Peter, Paul, and Mary, and Kauai, and Honalei.

Question is, is it true?

Also, anybody know of a good slack version?

Mike

Nice oft-repeated story about the song and its supposed connection to Hanalei Bay, but not true.

On their most recent appearance in Honolulu (2-3 years ago??), this bit of lore came up in the newspaper interview -- and PP&M were quick to refute it...again.

Nice story though!

I did some recording for Lenny Lipton back in the late '60s. I don't think he'd been to Hawai`i. Smoke and magic dragons were pretty common in the studio in those days, especially from the musicians. (whatever that means) http://www.tsimon.com/puff.htm

"If you remember the '60s you weren't there" - David Crosby

And yes, John's version of "Puff" is killer. Check it out.

Yeah, I remember that part too. Second Tet, Feb '69, definitely woke me up, but weren't the LRPs delicious.

Glad we made it home,

Dave

Hey, I appreciate both you guys (even though I was living in N.Z. at the time.) And Doug McMaster has a really nice slack key version too.

My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can.

Dave,

http://www.johnkeawe.com/

Thanks for the great info. Awsome. I bet most people do not know that (I certainly did not).

I love stories like that. A song springs from somewhere deep, and it touches people deeply. Sure, I know the reputation...but I still love that song!!

Agreed about both John Keawe's version and Doug McMasters'. I ran into Doug's first and liked it so much that I tabbed it out from the CD. (I pretty much have to see something to learn it.) This was especially painful because I have no ear for this sort of thing and I had not discovered slow-downing software. More than once during the process, my wife encouraged me - to forget it. This was strange because I very much doubt that it took more than fifty repetitions of the hard passages before I got them. Like the minor chord he uses on "dragon" right at the beginning.

Anyhow, since I had tabbed it, I wanted to share it. Which was one of the reasons for my interest in sharing tabs in other threads. Bottom line - if you get Doug to O.K. it, I'd be happy to send you a copy of the tab. It's handwritten but workable.

By the way -what were "The Sixties?"

jwn of the disappearing posts, but everchanging profile pictures. Glad you made it back also. Thanks for the inspiration to "slack" up Fixin' To Die Rag. No better time to resurrect that song than now.

I make light of the '60s because that's when I came of age. In fact I do remember them; my first love, Peter Paul and Mary (threw that in for the thread), folk music, the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Druids (my band), the Army, the Monterey Pop Festival, my first marriage. Many lifetimes ago, but very powerful, All part of the transition to now. Bless you all for being here.

Ke Akua Pu,

Dave

Yes, Go to the top of this page and you will see "home". go there, and then go to "links". You will be on the "artists" which has links to slack key artists sites, plus a few others that are of interest to slack key players.
