KBCS presents an evening with the "Duke of Uke", the legendary Bill Tapia on Saturday September 10th. The concert takes place at the Carlson Theater at Bellevue Community College. Show time is 7:30pm.
'Ukulele legend Bill Tapia is unstoppable. After celebrating a rousing kanikapilastyle 97th birthday party on New Year's Day, he returned home to Honolulu to release his latest CD, the diverse `ukulele driven masterpiece, 'Duke of Uke'.
Since the release of his first-ever CD, `Tropical Swing' (March, 2004), Bill Tapia's undeniable skills and charm have garnered worldwide recognition. Featuring new recordings plus a couple of tracks from his original heyday in the 1930s, `Tropical Swing' was played on hundreds of radio stations nationwide, reaching #10 on the CMJ Jazz chart. With his humor, energy, and total recall of career highlights back to World War One, he also became a favorite guest on talk radio from coast to coast. Paul Harvey of ABC Radio even shared the story of this amazing man with his worldwide audience. Feature articles and record reviews have appeared in the L.A. Times, Baltimore Sun, Honolulu Advertiser, Los Angeles Magazine and many others. The music industry bible Billboard Magazine said Tapia "takes his rightful place" alongside such long-gone luminaries as Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday and Fats Waller.
Bill Tapia has no plans to slow down. With the release of his new album `Duke of Uke' on February 8th and several concert appearances scheduled along with the airing of a PBS documentary about his astonishing life, 2005 promises to be an even busier chapter in the improbable resurgence
Tickets for an evening with Bill Tapia are available online at brownpapertickets.com and also on sale at Dusty Strings in Fremont, the Guitar Emporium in Ballard and Silver Platters locations in Southcenter, Northgate and their newest store at Crossroads Shopping Center in Bellevue.
