I found a collected set of rmmga posts about flying with guitars since 2001, it extends to 2004.
Very interesting and entertaining because the people who post travel a lot and write quite well. A few are excellent touring musicians and there is at least one astrophysicist and one airline pilot. Even (maybe, especially) the arguments are fun to read - especially the long running argument about whether (or not) to loosen the strings. There are amusing posts by people who game or scam the system and rejoinders by people who despise them for it and tell them why.
The bottom lines (which you probably already know) are:
1. anything that can happen does
2. your guitar is safest in a flight case like a Calton
3. the good old box trick, that Mark (and Frank Ford) describes, works but is cumbersome
4. an alternative for peace of mind is to take a beater
5. another alternative for (for sort of) peace of mind (if you don't love your guitar) is to get insurance on it.
6. you are almost certainly going to have to check the guitar, but #1 always applies.
But, try reading the posts: there are details that are interesting and, as I said, fun.

Aloha - I've only flown 4-5 times so far with my Martin (once to AMC), but so far so good.
The hard shell case is packed inside a custom padded case made by Colorado Case Co., which I highly recommend. It's not a bombproof Carlton, but then again it's only $200.

Because of the oversize it's been hand carried on and off the plane each time.

I travel often, have been to 7 different states besides my local flights to neighbor islands with my travel guitar-a beat up Martin D-15. I always carry my guitar in a gig bag, as my experience has been ,if it's in a hard case you HAVE to check it through as luggage (herein lies the risk), if it's in a gig bag they know it will NEVER survive baggage and allow you to carry-on. It especially helps to have backpack staps on your gigbag, and simply walk on.Only one time, when I took a puddle jumper from utah to arizona was the plane so small they asked to hand check the guitar as I boarded the plane, at least that way it gets hand carried to storage and returned by hand as you deboard. One tip-don't take guitar strings , capos or picks in your gigbag-put them in the luggage you check through. God bless, Pastor Harry P.S. The last time I saw Keoki Kahumoku he was real bummed about a brand new Larrivee the airlines had trashed and refused to pay for. It was in a hard case-checked through from the Big Island to Maui-and they crushed the top, bridge, etc.! |
