It's not really a slack topic but for those of you who know me, you know my dog Zoom. It's his birthday!! he's 2. Zoom's claim to slack key fame is that he mellows out to Sonny Chillingsworth music. As a pup being delivered home he was restless with Led's, and Dennis Paavo's CD's, but was paw tapping to Sonny's jams. To this day he still does. Dusty has Gus but not sure if listens to Dusty's mele's or not. ha. -slkho

My hamster always stays and listens. It's one advantage of keeping your pet in a cage. |

I wonder if Zoom would like the new song in Kapono Beamer's new Album, "Slack Key Dreams of the Ponomoe" (Thanks Keola and Kapono for the free CD via nahenahe.net), cut number 12, Bullah 'Ilio (The adventurous pit bull).
Bullah was a good boy Served his master every day Guarding at the homestead And scaring strangers away
hui: For two square meals and a walk to the mango tree (hooo-ooooh) Bullah, the pit bull, was happy as can be
and so on . . .
how-ooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Well, y'know, my dog Kibbles likes slack key too. I play for him every night out in the backyard while he's eating dinner -- got me trained right. Doesn't matter whether it's Sonny, Gabby, Ledward or whoever -- it's just me and him back there. He's gonna be 85 December 9. As for me, I'm 378.
Seems like forever since I last played a real concert -- 'bout 91 years I guess. Then again, maybe it was 56 years, I dunno … where I'm going with this? Where are my glasses?
Y'know all the guys I used to play with back then are all either divorced, broke or dead. Or is it broke, divorced then dead? No, I think its dead first because they were divorced or broke … yeah, that's it!
Played two or three Crater Festivals with Liko on the mainstage way back a long time ago -- with crowds of about 40,000 to 60,000. That was a lot of fun. Where's Mr. Peabody and his time machine when you need him?
I got students they're about 126 maybe 154. They think I'm old, maybe I am, but I don't think so. Been playing slack key longer than twice their age and can play rings around them too. Don't know about these young people nowadays.
City and County of Honolulu said I could get a Bus Pass when I reached 378 -- the official age of senior citizenship or crossing the threshold or somethin'. It used to be free got to pay for it now. Used to catch the bus when I was a kid. Is this what they call the circle of life?
I'm writing because they say its supposed to keep your mind sharp or pointy. Anyway, the dog's hungry. Got to get my guitar. He gets a free show with dinner.
Happy Birthday Zoom.

You know, I'd send Zoom a card but due to the fact that a particulary infectious jingle from a certain children's show has remained stuck in my head for the past 30 years, the chances are pretty good I'd send it to Zoom, Box 3-5-0, Boston, Mass., 0-2-1-3-4. (Send it to Zoom!) Sorry Zoom. |

There's even a CD out (catalog shopping again) entitled Songs to Keep Your Dog Happy. I would guess that it doesn't have any slack key on it so there's still room for a Dog CD from the taropatch.

Here's the way to make y'all feel younger (& Zoom older)---the more accurate formula for dog>people age: dog's 1st 2 years are equivalent to 24 people years, then it's just 4:1 after that. So Zoom is now 24 (& will be 28 next year), and I am 272 (beats 434, eh?) |

So what was my dog's actual age when he died last week, and we "think" we had him around 13 years? We picked him up after Ford Ord closed the Army base and the soldiers were just dumping their animals. He was found wondering around the base, hungry and thirsty.
He loved listening to Gabby and George and Ozzie, etc, but would draw the line when I tried to play my Ocarina. Then his howling would wake up the whole neighborhood! Thankfully, he didn't howl when I played the ukulele. He was a really good dog.
Sigh.... Julie |
