I have a dear friend who went to the MidWest UkeFest with me--she's totally island-isolated in Idaho and has never done anything Hawaiian, but she really enjoyed the one-hour hula 'auna workshop. I'd like to get her something to further her interest in hula--perhaps with a video/DVD or maybe just a book. It doesn't have to be just instructional--maybe something about Hawaiian dance, culture, etc.

Any suggestsions or specific titles, folks?

There are quite a few instructional hula auana videos/DVDs available -- but if she'd be more interested some of the cultural aspects of hula, I'd recommend the Merrie Monarch Festival video entitled "Hula: The First 30 Years".

Hi Tonya,
There are lots of us Idahoans trying to keep island culture alive here in the inland west. If your friend is in North Idaho, I'd be happy to help her find the local hula school. If she's in southern Idaho, there are some hula halau in the Boise area.

The DVD entitled "Maiki Aiu Lake," is a wobderful place to hook people on hula - Maiku was one of the great kumu hula of the 20th century. This video has great dance footage - and you get to see one of the best of the best. It also talks about what hula "is," some cultural issues, etc. I have people get this as their 1st or 2nd DVD because it is beautiful, enjoyable, has great depth and is the best "crash" course in appreciating hula I've seen. (I'm not a great fan of the how to hula DVD's.

My sincere appreciation to all. I've targeted some great DVDs, thanks to you folks. Now I've asked her if she even *has* a DVD player or if its videos I'm going to be buying. She's in Weiser, Jesse, the home of the fiddling championships--it's almost two hours from Boise, I think. I'll keep posted for Hawaiian "events" in the area for her (she's not real internet savvy).

Here's one more great video (don't know if it's on DVD yet):
Kumu Hula: Keepers of a Culture (1989)
