This is really nice.
Yesterday, Sarah ordered a shirt from Sig Zane's Hilo on-line store for her father who is going to Hawai'i to give a scholarly talk. He hasn't been there since WWII. She didn't want him to look like... somebody who didn't belong there. (We can talk about that more in private:-)
But, she messed up the order somehow, and wrote to the folks there in Ka `Olelo about her problems. Sort of a whim, although we know that Zane is married into the Kanaka`ole-Kanahele `ohana, so they have a strict tradition. So, swiftly, in nearly zero time, she gets back an email in Ka `Olelo telling her how nice it is to get dakine, and how rare it has become, and how everything is fixed up perfectly and how the writer is so happy to use her/his knowledge from school.
Just shows to go ya... fit in and you fit in.
(Sarah may not like this, but I have deemed it a Good Thing.)
me ke aloha pumehana y`all,

PS. I advised Sarah a long time ago to take no prisoners when performing: no English, only ka `Olelo; no matter if it is in France, Switzerland, CT, CA, HI, or wherever. Europeans can deal with that and love it. So can Islanders. Lingua Hawiiaca :-)

Reid, I eventually discerned your message, despite the translation from Hawaiian to Dewey Decimal System |

Damn. The original had the kahako and the okina in the right place. This shell that taropatch is constructed in is resolutely haole, so I edited back into the standard font.
For some reason, the title shows the diacriticals poperly.

Ahhhhhhhh...Sig Zane! One cannot visit Hilo without boarding the plane with a Big Island Candies bag filled to the brim with boxesof their goodies, and a Sig Zane store bag filled with his wonderful and exclusive creations (be they shirts, dresses or handbags).
Blatant plug for two of my favorite Hilo haunts: www.bigislandcandies.com www.sigzane.com
BTW -- chatted with Sig about dis-n-dat when we were in the store last month, once again sharing online-retailing stories (going online was a b-i-g step for him). For those not familiar with Sig, he started with the Hilo store...expanded to Maui about 3-4 years ago...added online shopping shortly thereafter. But he kept some designs as "only available in person at the Hilo store". Then he added "only available in person at the Maui store" for some of his designs. Good news for Zane addicts -- he'll be adding "only available online" designs soon. Wu-huuuuuu! |
