Aloha all,
Mike, I've also heard the 03 Cali reds are going to be banner. I tasted a few, mainly Cabernets. Nothing blew my socks off yet. I've only tried maybe 15 labels. Many times the initial reviews are taken from barrel tastings. That can go both ways. Classic example is a 2000 Ridge, Cab, Santa Cruz Mts. Perfect 100 outta the barrel. Dropped considerably when it got to market. Still good though. Best year ever overall for Cali reds was 97. That may not stand too much longer. The 2005 (this year) will most likely come down as the all time winner. Pretty much perfect. No huge unexpected rain, and not stupid hot. Vineyard yields for Napa and Sonoma are at or near record in volume. If nothing else, that allows the houses a lot more grapes to choose from. I think many of the Estate labels will be spectacular, but it should be very nice overall.
I saw a guitar once. (required related tie-in)
Dusty, we just cracked a 72 Krug cab last month. I know what you mean. It was very nice, but almost brick colored. That said, it was going downhill in about 15 mins. I actually stupidly decanted it, and ended up pouring it back in the bottle (magnum) and corking it. Sometimes the little bit of heaven is only meant to last a few moments I guess. Sidenote: we didn't finish it all and next morning it was uhhh vinegar.
Happy holidays to all the ohana
