Aloha E Kakou.

Sad to say, but at this point it looks as if the March Open Mic at Espresso Garden on Bascom will be the very last one, certainly at that venue. No solid prospect is on deck to buy the business.

So.... let's make it a good one. (If you want to perform at an open mic but never have -- here a wonderful, if fleeting, opportunity.)

I was thinking that it might be nice if everyone who plays performs their favorite song or two favorite songs.

I'll certainly miss the Espresso Garden open mic. I hope we can find another venue soon. I would like to try one more time to play a song. Thanks for the information Ray...

Well, that certainly isn't good news especially since it seems as though public interest is beginning to increase. As I mentioned recently, the Espresso Garden is a perfect venue for the monthly open mike and will be difficult to replace. If memory serves me, I recall that Steven Espaniola mentioned that he might have found a possible location to continue the open mike...

Art,
you're right. momentum is building and it would be a shame to let it go. Perhaps a minor miracle will occur, a new buyer will take over and continue EG as a music venue and keep the invite open.

I will check Island Grill on 4th. Street in San Jose to see if they are interested. Other places that I've check in SJ either don't have a sound system or just didn't "feel right" to me. (I'm also not at all attached to being the coordinator, so if someone else wants to step in, please contact me and I'll be happy to "pass the baton."

Steve's suggestion was the Kaleo (?) cafe in San Francisco. We held a kanikapila there a couple of years ago, and I seem to remember it is a fairly tight place. Also don't remember a sound system, but my memory isn't always great. I can't commit to coordinating an event in SF.

A sound system is not a requirement, there are several that are available and some of us can also bring instrument amps.

Someone might also want to approach the Hukilau owner since there are Hukilau's in SF, PA, and SJ.

Lawrence,
I occasionally eat at Hukilau SJ -- I didn't approach them because they don't have a sound system. I don't think most of us would carry in the backroom without amplification. If people are willing to bring in amplification, I'll be happy to approach them. I would want to hear from folks who would really commit to bringing amplification. Also, Hukilau has crummy parking -- Island Grill on 4th has great parking and is a bit more convenient to freeway.

I have never had trouble parking at Hukilau PA, the Palo Alto municipal parking directly across the street usually has hundreds of parking spaces, especially on a week-day nite. My problem with Hukilau PA is that it does not have a very good layout for observing performers (much like SJ come to think of it).

Any time I come, I can bring my 4 channel Carvin plus a mixer to expand beyond 4 channels. We can mostly dispense with monitors, or tilt one of the Carvin speakers toward the peformers, or I can rig a small third speaker, or we can go with wireless earphone monitors.

However, someone else will need to volunteer a second sound system as backup in case I can't make an event.

A lot of the folks who come and play also have their own Guitar Amps (as has been indicated on this forum). A lot of those amps have extra inputs for another Guitar and/or a microphone. We just need a few of these folks to bring their amp(s) and the sound situation is covered.

The performance area of the San Jose Hukilau is adequate although it isn't an elevated stage but as Raymond mentioned, parking can be a chore. The Palo Alto Hukilau performance area is a little more cramped but workable. If it came down to it, I'm sure Sil and I would be able to provide a sound system when needed...

I surmise that you mean the peformance area in the rearmost room, which is also the largest room. The sound would then carry to the front room from there.

And I was also going the mention that the bass player usually brings his own amp, so a 4 channel rig like my Carvin would be enough for just about anyone who has played so far. The only exception that I can think of is when KonaBob and BassMan Larry both joined Na La'au Ki'eki'e for an evening. If Pulelehua also played uke (which she did not), and if we added one more singer, we would have needed 8 channels including bass.

Yes, that's the performance area I was alluding to. Bringing my own bass amp is doable and would never be a problem and if needed I also have a 6-channel powered mixer...

Kaleo Cafe actually has ample space for an ongoing monthly event like this. The space is just more narrow as opposed to the open area at Espresso. They also regularly have an available PA onsite. Problem would be finding a host to run the show in SF. Any takers, email me directly and I'll put you in touch with the right people. I've already mentioned it to the owners.

The space at Kaleo is pretty narrow, but what is worse is that the parking situation in that part of town can only be described as atrocious. Last time I was there we came early (on a Saturday), yet still had to walk about 3 city blocks to get to the door, lugging all our gear.

Of course it should not be eliminated as a location as the owners are certainly supportive and we do not have a long list of candidate locations yet!

Here's where the reply belongs ....
I'm certainly not adverse to anyone wanting to check out other places, or to trying to set this up at a different venue.

For my money, I'm waiting to see what happens at Island Grill. I've eaten there a few times and think it would be a very good venue. Excellent parking, good food, almost as "intimate" as Espresso Garden. Would probably draw more "audience," too.

Of course, there is the outside chance of a miracle. (Hey, I grew up Catholic - we're used to miracles.)
