Saturday, Sept 9

This one _almost_ has me booking the l-o-n-g flight to Vienna VA -- Led Kaapana, Keali`i Reichel, and Halau o Kekuhi together on the same bill for the first time:

WOW -- I agree !!! I'm letting all my east coast friends and family know about this dream team event. UNREAL !! Who put this one together?

For anyone with friends and family in the D.C. area, Wolftrap is nearby and this lineup is totally amazing. again, WOW !!!

I'm hoping to see Halau o Kekuhi at the free hoike night for Merrie Monarch. Wish they televised that night so all of you outside Hawaii could watch it via the HNL channel on the internet. As we get closer to the competition, I'll post how to watch it via internet. Hoike night hasn't been televised but maybe this year .....

Me ke aloha,
Lynn

This lineup was assembled by PBS -- who, I've been told, will be filming it for a nationwide PBS broadcast, at a later date. Wheeeeeeeeeeee!

As for MM ho`ike, doubt that it will ever be broadcast -- which is what makes it so special (and is luring me to _finally_ be there in person to see it for myself, this year). The full lineup for the Merrie Monarch Festival hasn't been announced yet:
http://www.merriemonarchfestival.org
but I do know that SF Bay area kumu hula Mark Ho`omalu and his halau will be competing.

Sarah and I have decided to take the trip down from CT to this. We have seen each seperately, but together, it should be wonderful.

We have seen Halau o Kekuhi at the MM ho`ike, and they are awesome. They don't compete for several reasons, I assume. One is that they are more a serious way of life than anything else and, second, I am sure they would always win. They are like the US Marines, if you like military analogies: serious, disciplined, precise, one heart, one mind, one body, one purpose.

The tix are supposed to go on sale today.

I just bought a Merrie Monarch Program from the office at the Naniloa so the die is cast, as they say. I see that Sonny Ching is a judge this year, so his halau won't be competing. Also, the program has "Nalani Kanahele" as a judge .. but I think it should either be "Nalani Kanaka'ole" as her sister, Pualani, is the Kanahele. Bummer if they've printed all of the programs. Maybe I'm wrong. Hope so. Anyway, as one of the Kanaka'ole sisters is a judge, their halau can't compete for that reason as well. The program has all the halau and mele so it's a real treat.

When you do go to Ho'ike, be sure to go early. Last year it was way too full and I think the fire marshalls may be putting more of a limit on the numbers this year.

Me ke aloha,
Lynn

My wife and I will be traveling to Hilo for the Merrie Monarch later this month as my eldest son will be competing as a member of Kumu Mark Ho`omalu's halau, the Academy of Hawaiian Arts (AHA). Looking forward to the weeklong festivities and especially the competition itself...

Art, do you remember me from AMC? I was the Beanie Wahine with the bright orange hat. I believe you are friend / brother / cuzin to Sil da Thrill, if I'm right. I'll be in Hilo for the event and would love to meet up with you and your wife. I'll email you my phone number. How exciting about your son dancing. Let me tell you, Hilo is really getting ready for this event. You will love it !!!!

A hui hou

Lynn, I do happen to play music with Sil here in the SF Bay Area but that wasn't me at AMC - that was Sil's brother Genaro. Sure, would be nice to meet up with you in Hilo if possible...
