Good topic. This is not addressed as a retort to Mark's post but I want to bring up a side note topic.
As someone who periodically plays out for pay in my neighborhood, I think it is challenging knowing what's a competitive rate. Often this info is not published anywhere even though I try to search for comparisons among groups who regularly perform at weddings and corporate engagements in my area. Wish there were a "musicians handbook" to help me not step on someone else's toes.
Mark, can you offer any tips or guidelines for fellow 'patchers to appraise what they're worth? |

Mark, I understand and respect your argument. However, in this thread I don't think any of the respondents had any intent on taking anyone's gig (I certainly didn't) and I didn't get that impression at all. I know most of these slackers. Few of us are good enough to do that and those that are wouldn't be this blatant. It's a symptom of slackers simply looking for reasons to get together, perhaps at a new place. |

quote: Why pay when you can get it for free???
In my experience this is not exactly a new trend. It seems to be endemic in the "ARTS" or "Glamor Trades", no only in Music but in Acting, Cinematography, Sculpture, etc. There are lots of people willing to work for free (or nearly for free). I knew the Recording Engineer who did Eric Clapton's (Derek and the Dominoes) "Layla" album (done at Criteria studios in Miami). The lead song has been voted as top Pop or Rock-&-Roll song of the last XX years numerous times. This engineer got paid a fixed fee of next-to-nothing to produce this disc in 197x. This is one reason I switched over to designing computers.

Because I can't imagine anyone who would take them up on that offer?
This is a thoughtful post, Mark, thank you. And as Lawrence said, it is endemic to the arts (though I'd certainly call my dentist an artist, particularly considering the canvas I presented to him several years ago.)
In the years when I represented/promoted musicians in one capacity or another, I was often approached by organizations that wanted performers to appear gratis, because it would be "good exposure" for them. In most cases, I had to decline, noting that in artistic endeavors, you can "die of exposure."
Sometimes, those of us who do not make our living (or partial living) as musicians can lose sight of the range of challenges for those who do. |

Aloha e Mark, I think there was a distinction here... if you want the gig, contact him privately and you indicated you did. It's for a party - and I asked if he meant party-crashers were welcome. And he said yes. Heck - I've Paid to see you at a gig... And we've been trying to get together with Steve to talk wine, jam etc for awhile. So we'll wait 'til Steve responds, but I don't think we're stepping on your toes, or horning in on your stage presence. I hope you get the gig because I'm looking forward to seeing you again. n |

Aloha,
Wine club & Hawaiian music sounds like fun!
Would your wine club like to donate some wines for our school fundraiser "Aloha in the Redwoods"?
It is happening in September in La Honda, CA, just a little north of Santa Cruz in the mountains...
Maybe some of you road-trippers could drop off the wine here in La Honda on your way back!
Still in planning stages, but if you want to see what it's all about, here is a link to hear the music of Ledward Kaapana from last year's event streamed across the net, with photos too:

And of course, stay tuned for more details on this wonderful annual event!
