Since I play acoustic steel guitar in Taro Patch tuning, I decided to make myself a Taro Patch Bass. The resulting instrument sounds great and is easy to play. I have made 30 of them out of Big Island koa. I have a chord calculator and a short movie with some rough footage of George Kahumoku, Ledward Kaapana, and myself on the stick bass on my web site http://www.konawalkingstick.com.

I would be interested in hearing from anyone else who has attempted to play a bass in slack key tuning.

Hi all -

I suggest checking this out. Kona Bob himself came by to the Aloha Camp and plyed the heck out of that thing. In fact, a couple folks picked it up and could play right away - something that doesn't happen often!

As an old bass player myself (my first instrument, really. Still have the Farmus Star Bass I bought in High Scool... but I digress) I was amazed at the sound he got out of the puppy.

Mahalo, Konabob, for sharing this cool instrument.

Aloha kakou,

In the Eddie Kamae film "The Sons of Hawai'i" it was stated that the original base player for the group tuned his base in open A. So you've got historical precedence for open tunings on the bass.

Thanks guys, I have also found out that one of the CD's by Makaha Sons features a slack key bass player by the name of Kata Maduli. If anyone knows his email address, please let me know, as I would like to connect with the guy.

Thanks Debbie, I am hoping to meet Kata some day. I am sure he could teach me some tricks.
We are luck to have some great musicians visiting the Big Island this weekend. I am going to take my Kona Walkingstick to Waimea for a jam session with Ledward Kaapana and Jake the uke wizard tomorrow night. I am hoping to meet some other slack key musicians from around the island.
