For all you Bay Area folks out there, I want to give an unsolicited “plug” for the upcoming Woodsong Acoustics concerts this Friday and Saturday evening (Oct. 20-21) at the Pleasant Hill School House in Pleasant Hill. Headlining the show will be Chris Yeaton, a fellow Taropatcher and founder of Woodsong Acoustics. I went to the show last year and it was outstanding. Chris combines slack key with American finger-style guitar to create a beautiful, innovative, nahenahe style. Last year’s show also included William Coulter, a Grammy Award-winning classical guitarist, and Adam Werner, a contemporary, percussive, Michael Hedges-influenced guitarist. Adam also played a couple of songs on a harp guitar, which was the first time I had heard the beautiful but complex instrument. Both artists will be back this weekend (William will only be at the Friday performance), and they will be joined by other acoustic musicians (Check the Woodsong link, www.woodsongacoustics.com/events.php for the exact lineup).
I met Chris about 4-5 years ago when he lived in the East Bay. He was teaching slack key at the Pleasant Hill Adult Ed, and I saw his name in the catalog and called to say "Hi.” He was full of aloha and he invited me to sit in on his class, where I got to play a couple of songs. Unfortunately for us East Bay folks, Chris moved back to the Big Island (where he grew up) a couple of years ago. Chris has toured the mainland with Keola Beamer and John Keawe—not bad company! In addition, he has released at least two albums that I’m aware of, which take slack key in a new, contemporary direction, and which is healthy for the tradition.
If I’m not mistaken, one of Chris’s former students and fellow Bay Area Taropatcher, Brenda Lippincott, will be making her debut on this tour. Brenda is also a wonderful slack key/fingerstyle guitarist and it’s great to see her hitting the big stage.
Anyhow, tickets to the concert are an incredible bargain given the stellar lineup. Advance ticket sales are available at Countrywood Music in Walnut Creek for just $12.00 for one show or $20.00 for both shows. As of last Sunday, Countrywood Music still had a lot of tickets available. Tickets will also be sold at the door for $15.00. I’m planning to go to the Saturday evening show. Hope to see a lot of you there supporting our Taropatch ‘ohana.
Aloha,
Doug
