I caught Daniel, Herb and Keoki in concert this past week at Freight & Salvage and boy, what a musical feast. It was quite an eclectic performance. Keoki opened the show playing solo slack key. He started with a medley of hapa haole tunes with a lot of good-fun twists and story telling, reminiscent of his dad, Uncle George Kahumoku, Jr. Keoki also played some traditional Hawaiian songs, including an awesome version of “Hi’ilawe.” Man, can this guy sing.
Daniel was next and he played piano on several numbers (including an old Kilauea smooth jazz tune), did some Eric Clapton songs in standard tuning, played slack key in his G Kilauea tuning, and accompanied Keoki and Herb with his D-VI KoAloha and ukulele. Daniel sang on several of the songs too, including a fun original that had the audience participating. As Herb mentioned, “Daniel is such a talented musician, what can you say about him? Show off!” All kidding aside, Herb said that next to his father (the great Ohta San), Daniel is the most talented musician he’s ever played with.
Herb also played a couple of solo instrumentals, but I wished he could have played a few more. Herb has such incredible touch and his playing is sweet and pure, yet very intricate. He really is a musician’s musician.
Towards the end of the show, all three of them came on stage and played a number of Uncle George’s songs. My favorite was the song about leaving Hana. Daniel played the piano on this one, and it added a wonderful dimension to Herb’s ukulele and Keoki’s slack key and vocals. They definitely need to record this one.
The highlight of the show was at the end, when Daniel (on his D-VI) and Herb played an absolutely beautiful instrumental version of Kui Lee’s “I’ll Remember You.” They took turns leading, and the harmonies were stunning and just grabbed my heart. This several-minute-long instrumental led right into Keoki’s soulful vocals of the song. Incredible! These guys really know how to make you homesick.
I had a chance to catch up with Daniel and Keoki after the show, and it was so nice to see them since I wasn’t able to catch them at Uncle George’s Maui workshop this year. I also got to meet Herb for the first time. They are all so down to earth, full of aloha, and downright inspiring. Hawaiian music is in great hands with this next generation of masters.
Aloha,
Doug

Mahalo nui loa to Keoki, Herb and Daniel for enriching us with their tour. Keoki and Herb are headed home this morning for some much-needed rest. I always enjoy the concerts, and this time I drove down south for their last 2 Borders Books free gigs. I didn't buy any CDs because I already have them all... Keoki didn't have his most recent CD which should be available shortly here on the mainland. If you love pure slack key and his incredible singing, Buy It!!! Now if we could get Steve Espaniola down here........ n
