Ah, the nostalgia. One year, every morning I would wake up early (for me that's an oxymoron), make some coffee and just listen to the jungle and `aina awake. Along with that was the most beautiful slack key to be heard anywhere. Unknowing, it was my hale mate playing his nahenahe heart out. I think it was "Dusty in the wind". He was awesome even then. In class he was quiet and respectful and nobody thought he could play. I knew better. Hey buddy, give Sheila a big hug from me and Bev.
Reid. Funny you mentioned George. When the cockroaches rained on us, I don't think he missed a beat eating. Musta thought they were raisens. Mark has told me that centipede story a zillion times and I still laugh at it.
Andy, get to Hale 30 at Kaupoa and I'll buy you a drink. I hear the place has quite a reputation.

Ah but Reid, your report makes it appear as if we were at a fraternity party gone haywire. Actually, I thought that was YOU snoring.
Another time hubby and I tiptoed into our room after a jam at 1:00 AM and I inadvertantly dropped my big ipu, which merrily and noisily bounced about the concrete floor. John and Hope next door assumed that it was a big wine bottle, and I heard, through the paper-thin wall: "Well, that one is empty!"
But all kidding aside, I think you are right in that many of us, having been set on fire that year, have taken the torch and are trying to set the whole world ablaze. Who would have thought it then, A Grammy for Hawaiian music?
AND, I still remember some lovely blond lady with long hair addressing the audience at the Maui Slack Key Festival in perfect Hawaiian. Now that was a show-stopper. Lucky she had Kevin Brown on stage with her or she would have run away with the show. (Hya Sarah ) |

Aloha kakou! Ah, those were the days........I had totally forgotten about the cockaroach shower. but not the flies...... Magical moments far outweighed the difficult ones, like Keith playing my beautiful Po Mahina baritone 'ukulele at 2:00am in a rain downpour in Hale 2. And Auntie Nona playing the accordian and Keola dancing the "elephant" hula.... and my sagging lei po'o at the student concert that made me look like Miss Minnie Pearl of Hawai'i. Ah yes. |
