Last Thursday, the Santa Cruz Ukulele Club had it's monthly meeting at Bocci's Cellar, and the surprise guest was Eddie Kamae! The night before, Eddie and Myrna Kamae were in town to attend the showing of their movie "LI'A, The Legacy of a Hawaiian Man", at the Pacific Rim Film Festival. So they just happen to "show up" at the Ukulele Club meeting.

Toward the end of the meeting, Eddie played a few songs accompanied by Manley Bush, Vince and Vern of Huna Wai, Patti Maxine, and Brownie Barnes on bass, along with a few others whose names escape me. (The original bass player who played all night long very thoughtfully offered the bass to Brownie when it became clear Brownie really wanted to play! Roger and Brownie Barnes, who own Bocci's Cellar, went to King Kam School and of course knew all these songs!)

The electric energy was palpable in the room. I was brought to tears by E Ku'u Morning Dew, Eddie's first song. After that, he got the place rocking with some songs unknown to me, but the aloha was so overwhelming, he did several Hana Hous. I looked over at Vince and Vern and they were just beaming. Big Cheshire Cat grins! Patti Maxine was wailing on her steel guitar. Noone wanted the magic to end.

It's difficult for me to convey the charged atmosphere in the room that night. But I will remember it for a long time to come. A big Thank You for Andy Andrews, the "Secretary" of the Club, and all the other people who made this surprise possible. And of course, my heartfelt thanks to all the people who labor to keep this beautiful music alive and well.

Still under the influence... Julie
