The Black Box isn't exactly a loop tool, but it's beat synch fx are quite inspiring. The podcast has lots of audio examples.

Another very powerful tool is the NI Guitar Rig, a combo of hardware and software that does some astonishing things. It's loop function is the most powerful, and easiest to use, I've encountered. I reviewed it about a year ago. There's an audio file of a song I created with the loop tool:

Massively cool articles! As always, Mark, thanks. Really, though, I am looking for something much simpler, much more compact. (like the Digitech JamMan). I think it has a way of synching with a pc.

From what I've heard on the street, the Digitech JamMan is pretty much the standard.
