After all those discussions about how Hawaiian music is just about the only place left that is worth listening to ..... I just have to post this ....
We recently returned from a visit to Guatemala. I had almost the same reaction, well ok, maybe only 70% intensity of the same reaction, to hearing Guatemalan marimba music as I did to slack key. We heard 5 different groups in 6 days. I think it is impossible to feel down when you listen to a marimba band hit their groove. If you want to check it out, look for one of the recordings of Marimba Chapinlandia. (And, yes, I'm having a marimba shipped back home. It wll be interesting, E Ku'u Morning Dew on a marimba.)

I don't know, I'm partial to Corinne Bailey Rae these days. Also, as far as cool percussion instruments are concerned, check out the Peruvian cajón:
