The other day, Dan Sythe mentioned that the 'ukulele group he plays with was making their first public appearance. As Paul mentioned before, Bruddah Poki of KNUI (Maui) hosts Hawaiian music on the third Thursday of each month under the Monkeypod tree in Wailuku. It being the last windy day for a while, I was going to go windsurfing but wimped out and chose Wailuku instead. Well this quickly turned from a little casual mele to one of those jaw-dropping moments to remember for decades.

The group consists of four women with great voices, multi-part harmonies, lovely 'uke rhythms, and Dan on accoustic bass. Pamela Polland leads, and with Sugandha Black, Suzette Marlowe and Mercy Kraft, they sway, smile and entrance.

Mr. K (Kahauanu Lake Trio) was there and talked about old Honolulu music--something like thirty plus years of playing. Kumu Walter Kawaiaea, who I guess is sort of a protoge of Mr. K, told the moving story of how Pamela's group received its name, Keaolani.

So you've got Mr. K leaning on his cane, Walter strumming along with everything, Bruddah Poki telling stories, the breeze blowing under the tree on a sunny Maui day, and a dozen audience members along with Luana Kawaiaea all doing synchronus flowing wrist hula with this amazing music.

When they record, buy it. If you are on Maui, third Thursday is a gotta be there. Uluwehe Guerrero next month.

Aloha, Bill

Wow! Mahalo for this info. Sounds like you had a great time. Is anyone going to be there on Feb. 22? We will be on Maui then.

Thanks for the heads-up, Bill! I will be on Maui Feb 15th - that would be the third Thursday, right? Can you tell this malihini where to find "the Monkeypod tree in Wailuku" and also what time the performances generally start?

Mahalo!!

Easy, Deb. It is at the church near the corner of Main and Rte. 30. And,if you went further up Main, you would pass the Bailey House and wind up in `Iao Vally. If you come east along 30, look to your left as you approach the light. Not far from Kitty and David's.

Thanks, Bill, for the beautiful and generous review of the concert with Poki under the monkeypod tree. I know many of you in the Taro Patch world from workshops with George Kahumoku and Keola Beamer, and we are bonded in our love of Hawaiian music and Hawaiiana. I finally took the time to join Taro Patch now (pa'a hana).

It was a great honor and Kuleana given to us by Uncle Kahauanu Lake when he named us Keaolani that day. We are all deeply touched by it, and we are working hard to live up to the name. And we are deeply grateful to Poki for his kindness, encouragement and inspiration.

I'm amazed to find myself playing the music that I have loved for so many years. Thanks to all of my Taro Patch friends that have helped me along the way on this path. He nui ko'u aloha ia 'oukou.

Keaolani is performing at Whale Day on February 17 in Kihei in support of Halau Wehiwehi o Leilehua, Gordean Leilehua Lee Baily, Kumu Hula, for any of you on Maui. Ten A.M.

Aloha, Dan

Aloha Lawrence, Whalesong got off to a good start this season, and the songs are very interesting this year. However, we had a big storm here recently and the hydrophone was damaged. The good news is that the buoy, solar panels, electronics, are all in good shape. We are hoping to mount a repair mission on Sunday and have live whalesongs on the website at www.whalesong.net by the end of the weekend. Next weekend we plan to bring live whalesongs to Whale Day in Kihei, and Whalequest at the Ritz Carlton in Kapalua. Good to hear from you. Aloha mai, Dan
