In my quest to learn the Hawaiian language, I have discovered the following most excellent website. It is presented by Kamehameha Schools and was broadcast on local Hawaiian TV in 1994. These are video lessons taught by Ekela Kaniaupio Crozier. It consists of 30 different video lessons each lasting about an hour. I have not mastered many of them yet...I am glad they are very elementary! They are very well-taught, and even funny at times. The kumu has a great wit about her. There are even downloadable (Adobe) lesson materials with copies of all the slides she uses and class exercises to practice the skills you have been taught in each lesson. Short of having my own private kumu, this is about the best I have found...for free. I suggest you explore it. We need to bring honor to the language..and be pono about it.

Hi Wanda,
It's a great show and at a great price!
Check out the Hawaiian Language section in the Links area. You might like Nahenahe - Sweet Melodies of Hawai`i also taught by Ekela Kaniaupio-Crozier. |

Glad to see this site is back up and running. I checked in Dec. and it was unavailable, down for technical reasons.
If you're hunting for language help, definitely seek out this site. As Wanda points out, it is free -- so no more excuses! ;-)
Ekela is very engaging, and she conveys important cultural concepts in the course of her teaching about the language. Helpful and interesting stuff not usually found in a book. Her Nahenahe song series is also really good. Each hour-long show, she has a musician guest with whom she discusses (in English) a given Hawaiian song, and again, the great tidbits of language and cultural knowledge come across -- as well as great music. And, each show merits more than one listening.
aloha, Sarah

Aloha Kakou! I also watch Ekela Kaniaupio Crozier to review my 'olelo Hawai'i since I took my 'olelo Hawai'i classes in college. I also assist akrauth with the Hawaiian conference calls that we taught over the kelepona. It is fun. If you want to learn please free to email me or akrauth. Mahalo nui loa. |
