This Sat in San Francisco is the Tommy Emmanuel and Jake Shimabukuro show.

I know it is sold out because they emailed ticket holders to see if they would give up their seats. Not likely!

Anyway, we look forward to a fun show.

Hope you make it too.

John

UncaJohn,

Please do report. Man, I wish I could be at that show!

If anyone is interested in seeing Tommy (sorry, without Jake), he just played Wood Songs Old Time Radio Hour. It's archived at http://www.woodsongs.com/showlist.asp BTW, also other good stuff archived like John Cruz and audio of Led Kaapana & Cyril Pahinui.

Aloha,

Wow, what a concert.

Jake - as we know by now - is great! Some of you have caught him with Jimmy Buffett, some as a solo, and some with other acts like Tommy Emmanuel. I have not heard nor read a bad report.

To me, Jake is really a classical styled player who treats a uke like a small guitar.
Jake has been using you tube as well. Check out these links.

Well, you get the idea.

It was like that.

We got lucky and sat even with the sound board. That is not close, but I have not heard a better sounding concert in a long time.

Tommy Emmanuel was amazing. I don't know how I've missed this guy. My bad. This guy has been around a long time. He's from OZ, and he has 15 albums listed on his site. He has payed his dues. He uses a guitar like a four piece band. He predates the computer and he can sound like an analog garage band in a box.

try:

I find him very "Paul Winter Consort" -- esc. If you start your day with this one, you will likely be more kind to other people.

Or, another video to try is:

or just search him.

OK, we got drenched going into the show - big rain. Since the show was in San Francisco at the Palace of Fine Arts, we went to Liverpool Lil's before the show. A great time was had by all. We ran into old friends we hadn't seen for awhile; some casual friends we are getting to know; and we made some new friends as well. What a perfect set-up.

On a couple of songs, Tommy was joined by his "fiance," (he said this last year, too, I am told). She is a country styled singer who could live in Nashville. I hear TN is short on tunes, so she should do well.

For the encore, we got a Jake and Tommy collaboration, and then a trio of all of them. Very cool. There was an improvisational aspect to the encores that added some spark of new energy. I liked that.

Well, if I can hope to convey anything to you, I want to say that you should not miss either of these guys if they pass near your town. (Someone traveled from Arizona to SF just to see this show, I'm told.) Also, check out those Youtubes - you may surprised at how your day could improve.

Oh, there is a down side. If you are an aspiring player of either instrument, you might be disheartened to learn how far you have to go to catch up with the big boys.

By the way, Jake is very kind - he hung out in the lobby before and after he played. He spent personal time with everyone who approached him. I saw this kid (maybe 17) who kinda looked mainland "streetwise" standing nearby. The kid built up the courage to speak to Jake. Jake took his time with the kid, was generous with his words, and then signed the kids old leather jacket. You could see the stars in the kid's eyes and the smile on his face. The Aloha was great. Jake may have steered a potential punk into a virtuoso - saving the world one player at a time. (My little story, semi-true or otherwise, it is fun to imagine.)

Catch ya later,
John

PS Andy, I clicked your link and got a long piece (well over an hour) that started with another player. I didn't have time to watch. Is that the right one?

Yes, you ultimately want to find this: http://webcast.msc.uky.edu/woodsongs-428.wmv

Michael Johnathon, the host, opens the show with a song. Then Tommy comes on for the remainder of the program.
