When I got the CD last week (mahalo!), it sat on my desk waiting for "quiet time" -- when I could listen and appreciate every note. That time came pre-dawn yesterday morning, and I was blown away. So much so, that (as you know from my private email to you) it was the featured CD on my radio show yesterday. Beautiful, beautiful ki ho`alu.

Bravo! Bravo! Bravo!

Auntie, you make my eyes water. I tried to catch the show on the net, but Live365 wouldn't cooperate. Maybe I was doing something dumb, but I missed it. Your email and your post are so much appreciated.

Funny thing, when I was coming down to the end of this multi-year project, I was a bit sick of it. All I could hear when I listened were the mistakes I made playing, it sounded bad on the car stereo and worse on our home system, my graphics designer flaked out on me, I kept asking myself why an over the hill haole guy would have the nerve to make a slack key CD. Now, hearing that people enjoy the music, even spend real "could buy food" money on it, I'm so touched and flattered I'm starting to like what I hear when I listen to it.

Thank you for your kind comments, and for everything you've done to assist my (and so many others) discovery and exploration of Hawaiian music. If you dig through your server logs you probably know I'm on http://www.mele.com (PLUG!) nearly every day, not buying (oh, no, another cheapskate!!) but chasing down song titles and versions and artists and albums. Without the rich resource you've created I would be an even dumber over the hill haole.

Your fan,
Fran

Hear, hear, Fran and all our friends here at Taro Patch. Auntie Maria deserves some kind of Na Hoku award. If it weren't for her, there would be just about no kiho`alu or other Hawaiian music here in Ohio. I use Auntie's web site plenty to order music (I'm a contributing member to her retirement fund), but as Fran said, I use it for research, plenty. When I become interested in a specific mele, I go to her web site and query by the name of the song and listen to all the various recordings she has of a particular song. I love how the web site is organized, for instance, the Na Hoku winners. I can listen to snippets of each of the winners and appreciate what good stuff they do. I use it to make up a wish list of stuff I eventually will buy. It is great for listing concernts, for finding information of hula halau and for finding videos. The only thing that breaks my heart is when I find music I like, but the CD listed "out of print". Need more Gary Haleamau stuff. Speaking of which, does anyone know what , if any, "Sons of Hawai`i" stuff Gary plays on?

Me ke aloha

Awwww...mahalo nui for the "props up"!

It's a joy to be able to spread the word about island musicians -- not just selling their recordings, but providing fans with links to information about them, their music, and their gigs.

Feel free to prowl through MELE.COM anytime...free admission!

Hi Fran,

Congratulations on getting your CD done! It's comforting to know that there are still good music being made today despite the majority of bad CDs sold in music stores. I guess music recordings are like guitars, the mass produced ones are not so good but the homemade or handmade ones are made with the best qualities. I hope you sell all of them so you can start the next one. But don't forget to take a breather and enjoy some of the recognition you will get. I can't wait to get a copy for myself.

Cheers,
Mark

Fran,
I played your CD all the way back from KBC to Haliewa. Nahenahe Dude! I haven't read the liner notes yet. Did you use your travel guitar for any of the mele? Let me know if you get that party sked. An email will hit my blackberry as fast as a mobile phone call (and with my hearing) will get my attention.
A Hui Hou,
Mike

Hey, Mark, welcome to the `Patch, buddy. Heeeey, waidaminnit, I checked your profile and you've been registered for years! One of them lurkerbees, eh? Do another one???? DO ANUDDAH ONE??? (can you tell I've been listening to Rap Repplinger?) I'll take a break, all right, and not to bask in the fame. This time I'm gonna really really really wait until I have all the material solid under my fingers then do all the tracking in a few days. My mastering engineer said that all the different recording techniques and room tones drove him crazy, because his job is to make all the tracks blend and sound similar. Will you be getting up to Healdsburg this year?

Hey, Mike, thanks so much for the kind words, but I think it's risky using "Kaleponi" for late night driving music <snoooze>. The liner notes don't mention the guitars used, someone suggested I blog the info or something but I haven't done so yet. The travel guitar is very new, it arrived three days before we left on this trip. So it wasn't around for any of those tracks.

In order for me to have your Blackberry address, howzabout you shoot me one at fguidry at yahoo dot com (like the spamstards don't have bots that look for such obvious disguises). I'll shoot you email as soon as we know about the kanikapila here. Also we'll definitely be heading your way at least one more time, so I'll ping you on that too. I'd love to hear you play. All I could do at the brewery was watch your fingers - I can confirm that they never leave the hand.

Fran

Heeeeyyyyyy, I forgot the grinds report. JJ's Bistro, located conveniently in the same block as Harry's Music on Wai`alae is one of the more unusual eateries I've ever visited. The Laotian owner/chef originally specialized in very fancy patisserie (French pastry) and his stuff is gorgeous, but a few years ago he added a full menu for lunch and dinner. Here's a local food blogger's take on JJ's with some nice pics:

http://onokinegrindz.typepad.com/ono_kine_grindz/2005/04/jj_french_pastr.html

The blogger was not thrilled with the Laotian/French/Italian fusion but we were absolutely charmed by our dishes. As he says, the salad dressing was delightful, a creamy concoction with a touch of sesame. The cucumber he mentions is obviously cut with a mandoline. Bad Foodie <grin>. Even though we're starting to see the end of our trip, we definitely plan to visit JJ's again.

Ooops, back again. I just located JJ's web site: http://www.jjfrenchpastry.com

Hi Fran,

Thanks for the welcome. I guess I've been here for years lurking but I wasn't able to post because I forgot my login name and password. I just figured it out yesterday so I'm back. I will try to be at Healdsburgh this year but I will not have funds to make an instrument purchase. I just got one guitar commissioned so I'm broke. I hope to join you in your next kanikapila, let me know when it's getting close.

Mark
