Aloha all!

Gary Medeiros here; winner of Frank B. Shanners 9th Annual Falsetto Contest. Alika (Aunty Genoa Keawe's version) is my winning song. You can hear four songs on Hula records Falsetto Winners IV. I sing Alika, Ho'onanea, He u'i, and KHBC. I love the cha-lang-a-lang style of music and have been singing and playing since I was 5 years old. I am local born and was reared in Kaimuki, Waianae, Maili, Kalihi, finally graduating from McKinley High School. Army (Airborne) Warrent Officer retiree with assignments to Ft Bragg, Korea, Panama, and Italy. Desert Storm vet and other missions.

In high school, I bought my first Kamaka 6 string ukulele for $120. today, I own a new 6 string Kamaka which cost me over the $120...lol. this was a gift to me for winning the contest.

So, now living in Issaquah, I am looking forward in bringing the music I so love and enjoy to play. Like I say, "When we play, we play." Ask the guys from the group "Da Uddah Guyz" as well as Uncle Danny and his guys. Surprised the gang at Aunti Lani's Kontry Korna Kitchen...

Blessed Be! and Aloha!!!

Welcome to Taro Patch, Gary. And welcome home safely from the Army. Thank you for your service to our nation. I work for DoD as a quality specialist, so you may have used various parts I inspected like: tank roadwheels; Patriot missile launcher actuators; AH-64 engine parts; stainless steel potable water tank and on and on. Our daughter was in Army reserves and did time at Ft. Bragg (PsyOp).

Are you related to our Taro Patch friend, Peter Medeiros? Da swell geetah picker? I goonna go Auntie Maria's web site and find your music.

Mahalo for joing Taro Patch and sharing your mana`o. We one swell bunch of folks.

Aloha nui! Pehea 'oe? My name is Alex, but my Hawaiian name is Alika.
You're so lucky that you can sing "Alika" well. I am working on it when time allows. That song has been the first song I have ever been nervous about singing in front of crowds. It shocks me because I usually love performing. I think it might be because the note I have to hold is so high. I am getting better though. Maybe it'll come with more practice. What do you think?
I don't just sing; I also love playing the piano. This is my 13th year playing it.
I would love to talk story. Please email me! You may also check out my myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/mainer44 My display name is Aia i Aaaaaa-liiiiii-kaaaaaa!
Welcome to the patch. I look forward to reading more posts from you.
A hui hou,
Alex "Alika"
P.S. Please call me by my Hawaiian name. Oh yeah, and I'm wahine just so you know.

He kehau ho'oma'ema'e ke aloha.

Welcome to the TP, Gary!
I heard the soundclips of your songs (from the falsetto compilation) on mele.com and I was astounded. You da bomb! Your voice is so much like Uncle Joe Keawe. I hope you record an entire falsetto album so we can all enjoy it.
I hope to get over to the Puget Sound area to jam with you and the gang there.

Well, this is a regular Falsetto Contest Winners reunion, isn't it? ;-)

Aloha from New Jersey! It's great to hear from you again! I continue to enjoy your CD but I dearly miss your company. Any plans to come east? We just finished two consecutive weekends of Hawaiian-style fun and kanikapila. Wish you had been with us.

Did you win that `ukulele in the contest? No way. Must have been one gift to yourself. All I got when I won was a gift certificate to Hilo Hatties, a lifetime supply of Maui Macs, and a kick in the `okole. ;-)

I will be in Hawai`i in September for the contest - just for kicks. Will I maybe see you there? Take a weekend off and come over!

Keep in touch...

You are so welcome and thanks for the welcome back. 20 years of military and parachuting was easy and not. But I love the islands and the music I have sung throughout this period. Have to say I do not know the Medeiros side of my family. Long story...lol. I am glad for all the musicians and aloha's from all the gang here on taropatch. I look to post more information of various times I get to play more music throughout Seattle area and abroad. So, on with da Kanikapila...

Alika,
I have to say as a wahine, Alika should be easy for the words are right in front of you (in your mind). Unless you sing as an alto, tenor, or bass. But; as Aunty Genoa would say, "If you understand the meaning of the song, the words flow out so easy and beauty." So, go out and sing in front of millions and tell the story of the ship named Artic and how it traveled to Hawai'i.
Eh, you not going know how you sound unless you do practice in front of the crowd. It's you and only you that will realize where the inflections are and where the mistakes are being made. this is the way I improved on singing this one tough song.
Aia A~~~li~ka~~~~~~~~lol

Tanks for the welcome and the compliment. It was a tough song to do about 4 times over in the studio. By the end of the night, my voice was like Lauren Bacall...lol. I have to thank Aunty Genoa for telling my sister to get me to the Falsetto contest. Though I did not enter 2001, procrastination. I did enter the 2002 contest, for I was about to return to Hawai'i for a visit, and felt if I did not, Aunty GK and others would wonder why I did not...so I did and look I am here...lol
As for the album, I have heard the remaining 9 tracks, it is a beautify CD I would say, but das jus me...lol. I put oder songs on the CD to remind all that there is still beautiful olde music that has not surfaced for many years. Also, I did those songs so many can dance hula to it.
So, everyone, write hula records and lets get this one off to a good start!

Wanda,
Thanks for the message and the compliment. It took a lot of practice and pointers from Aunty Genoa. Its the ability to get just enough oxygen out from my lungs and diaphragm to produce the note needed to continue the AAAAAAAAAAA. There are days that my diaphragm does not want to cooperate...lol. Da potogeee I guess...lol. IT is also humidity and weather that plays a lot in singing too. To dry, no can, to wet; too much galagala...lol. Just right, and I can hold dat one (4 count) for 21 counts.
I still practicing to Aunty's albumns to ensure my vocal muscle does not forget how to maintain that note.

Oh yes, I used to listen to Uncle Joe's music when I was in high school, so that is where the yodeling comes in.

Bill,
Well it's about time you wrote...(stamping foot like one tiddah...lol) It is great to hear from you, was wondering what happened. I still want to go east to hear some of those 78's you have. As for going home, no time off from work,. Maybe next year (2008) Falsetto contest. Is Frank still putting them on?
As for the ukulele, my mom bought it as a gift for all those years I used my other Kamaka, the one in the contest. I bout that one at $120 in 1976...lol. Pay dat now? No way...lol. So, the next time you guys going jam in NJ, gie me enough warning so I can book a flight to join da jamz...
Oh yeah, I play for food too you know...lol.
Keep in touch, send me an email here or at gtm930 @ comcast.net. Let's talk story.
