In the thread about Hawai`i 78, Auntie Maria directed our attention to the Makaha Sons of Ni`ihau CD, "Live at Hank's Place". That is really an amaziing CD. First of all, the variety of the songs on it makes it both lively and sweet. There are some great tradtional songs, classics. There are more contemporary songs, as well.

One song that has always piqued my interest is "Lai Toodle". The melody is so sweet, but the story is so bitter (and rightly so). When I read Sugar Town by Yasushi Kurisu, he spoke in there of a very real luna who rode a white horse and who was very, very strict. I wonder if this man could be the infamous "Lai Toodle". I've also wondered about how they could sing the mele without the "SOB'ing haole" hearing it and getting really mad. Maybe he was fooled by the sweet melody? Maybe he thought the sweet melody made it a song of praise about him? I would have to think, however, that if anyone heard the SOB words, they would flat out understand it is no praise song.

If anyone knows any history about this song, I would appreciate the opportunity to learn.

Mahalo.

I'm not sure it is the original title, but an older title of this is "Haole Pupuka", and those words are sung in place of "SOB'ing Haole" in older renditions of the song, and even newer. It is based on the melody of an old sailor's shanty called "Botany Bay". It can be found in 1800s publications. Ata Damasco did a very sweet version of the song on his latest release. I don't have it handy but I think he used both of the phrases.
