I've wondered about the same thing. I know that "taropatch" tuning was used by Joseph Kekuku when he started playing steel back in the 1890s.

If you get the chance listen to the oral histories that she did with Elie Williamson and Kawena Pukui at Bishop Museum. The last time I listened to them was almost 40 years ago. They are good in terms of original source material. I do not recall a differentiation of slack key in terms of an specific terminology, ie., there was no codification. However, it is a first hand account from her that provides us with a window into the past.

Mahalo Peter, I was aware of some recordings with Alice at BM but didn't have any specifics. Will definitely look for them next time I'm over there.
