Eh Sandy,
Clearly your priorities are skewed...
Actually, I've come to the conclusion that the Sandman doesn't exist... very smart postings, excellent writing... but must be a ghost... never appears in person at any events.....

Hope it's not the choking ghost.

Kimo West is one of the artists performing at this festival and it was a pleasure for me to hear him live for the first time last night at the Mainland celebration of Bill Tapia's 100 birthday. His style is beautiful and very much all his own.
Rumor has it that the promoter may be setting up a workshop with him, so post or write if you're interested.
mahalo Kimo and Mitch!

Two weeks!!! Only 2 weeks to go before what promises to be one of the most terrific events/shows/festivals here in Southern California! And there are several peripherals: workshop in Carlsbad with Jeff Peterson Thurs Jan 17th, workshop with Jeff in Manhattan Beach Sat Jan 19th, reception and excellent buffet dinner at Duke's in Malibu for an opportunity to meet and visit with the performers, many of whom are Grammy winners; round-table with Ozzie Kotani Sunday Jan 20th, interesting vendors whose goods should be of interest to us Hawaii-phyles...... and then the BIG EVENT!!!! The concert has so much talent that we are likely to be on overload with silly grins, wandering the streets afterwards looking for spam or cheap airline tix to the 50th state.
So if you haven't gotten your tickets yet, be sure to check the SoCalSlackKeyFest.com website and get them. There are still tickets available, though Bill has the front row tied up (along with others).
My personal hope is that this is such a success that the event becomes "the first annual....."
Non-related events include music and Hawaiian food at Bob's 'Ohana in Gardena Thurs and Friday nights. Auntie Gerry and the gals play and sing Thurs night and there are many dancers. Friday night, dancers again welcome as Henry Kamae, Roger Waialae, Pete Kahele, Joe Aki, Juneus Montgomery and perhaps others entertain us. Makaha Sons are performing at 3:00 and 8:00 Saturday night in Whittier and there is good live music and dancing at Back Home in Lahaina in Carson Saturday night.
Don't miss it!!

Hi everyone - most of the orchestra section has been sold although I just opened up a few seats in row J. If you're waiting to buy tickets then they may be gone by the time you decide - some stuff is coming out in the papers this week so you can still beat the rush and get good seats before it does.

Don't forget the meet-and-greet at Duke's - you are all welcome to bring your guitar to play at the open mic so it'll be a lot of fun!

Thank you to all of you who have been so supportive and excited about this event!!!

Mahalo nui to Mitch Chang for bringing such an amazing show to us in Southern California. I can't begin to describe what a phenomenal and successful event he pulled together for us. Each of the individual performers was in peak form. The talent on that stage was tops. Imagine all the talent brought to you at the slack key festivals in Hawai`i, then imagine it in comfortable seats with gorgeous lighting, nice setting, no bugs, no sunscreen; and though not free, it was an excellent bargain.
And it was the FIRST ANNUAL!!!!! that is what we'd really hoped for.

Wow is all I can say. I was moved to tears by many of the performances I experienced Sunday evening. Thank you Nancy for provided a place to have a workshop with Ozzie. I am sorry I was unable to attend the workshop Saturday but I volunteer or work (this Saturday was volunteering).

Maggie's (Mahina M) Sister will be forced to become a member now that she owns a guitar after winning the Traveler Guitar in the raffle. She said she has never won anything in her life. It was worth it just to be sitting next to her and watching her get so excited.

I can't wait for next year.

Look for reasons to be happy rather than excuses to be miserable.

I would add that it was also lots of fun to meet so many taropatchers at the workshops and at the event. You should have seen the looks I got from the "non-taropatchers" when Ozzie called me out, came up and gave me a hug at the post show.

Thanks again Nancy for providing the home-away.
Thanks Mitch for pulling it all together. You need more XL T-shirts for us "bruddahs that take wide turns".

There's Bill (bbenzel) and Vicki in the front center and me and Sheila (we're not pictured) just beyond the woman on the extreme front right.

Thanks to all for making it a memorable experience!
