That is Marlene Sai standing on the left, Boyce Rodrigues sitting in the middle, and I am not sure of the lady on the right.

"Plus hula" is an understatement. That is hula master Kealoha Kalama. I had the privilege of singing the same song while she danced it - twice - while in Hawai`i: once at Aunty Genoa Keawe's show (I called Aunty Kealoha up out of the audience and then thought, "This is a bad idea") and again at Aunty Nickie Hines 80th birthday party.

A beautiful moment, but it was actually May 11, 1990. I was there and it was probably the best concert I have ever attended. I still have my t-shirt, poster, and program.

I got to shake Robert's hand here in Santa Cruz just this last Wed night 10/10 at the screening of the movie "Na Kamalei: The Men Of Hula", which documented the preparation his all male Hula Halau went through for the 2005 Merrie Monarch event.

Robert, to say the least, is a delight. He spoke a little before, and answered questions after the movie was shown.
The movie is very warm and funny and at the same time very intense and highly motivational even for someone who doesn't practice Hula |

I always thought they were kind of boring and have never been one of my favorites. I have one of two of their albums but was never all that impressed.
I've met them once at the concert they had for the 90th Anniversary of the Moana and had them sign the program, which I have framed. I got all the entertainers to autograph it. I keep it out of the sun so the signatures won't fade. Have never seen their May Day show.

I have seen snippets of the film, I guess they call them "trailers"?? He is very intense when wearing his kumu hula hat.
His voice (and Roland's harmonies) is so sophisticated, so perfect. Then again, he can rip into the "old kine" without missing a beat.
When we went O`ahu in May, we did take in the Lei Day show. We also met a young girl workiing in a scrapbook supply store who was in the Kamehameha School song contest and her group was coached by Robert Cazimero. He can go from operatic to ki`ekie`e and anything in between. (Sort of like Bill Wynne, yeah?) In my book, not boring at all.
But why him, Bla, Cyril and so many other guys wear dem scarves/hats all the time on their heads? No shame have skin on the head. You was borned with it. Better than a comb-over, for sure. |

The last time I saw Dennis he looked like a punk rocker with the bandana, shaved head and black nail polish ... but that's Dennis. He was always a little whacky the way he dresses. Speaking of Dennis, wonder where he's been lately? He's usually on line all the time and I miss talking with him. |
