Teja Gerken has been hosting his Acoustic Guitar Showcase for a number of years now, featuring a wide range of musicians from the Bay Area and beyond. He has asked me to join him for his November showcase and I'm honored to be there.
The venue is the Bazaar Cafe, 5927 California Street, San Francisco, between 21st & 22nd Avenues. You can find the cafe on the web at http://www.bazaarcafe.com/index.html .
The show will take place on Wednesday, November 28, starting at 7:00 PM.
The format of this event really shows off acoustic music. There are no microphones, pickups, amplifiers, or speakers between the audience and the music, so you hear the player and instrument as they really sound. I hope you'll be able to join us.

Howzit Fran! Unfortunately it doesn't look like I'll be able to come by and support you. However, there's no doubt in my mind that you'll knock them dead and do us all proud. Have a great show... |

Fran Just curious how you are going to deal with the acoustic only format. Are you planning to play a little harder than usual?

Les, at today's gas prices, I'm _really_ honored that you're making the trip.

Fran: I am for sure not going to the city with my truck, with the gas prices and parking. I am going to take my wife's mini-cooper. Aloha, Les

Bob, I play a little too hard already, so I'm hoping the acoustic volume will be sufficient.
I remember seeing Patrick Landeza play this gig several years ago. He used his koa topped Tacoma which was not a very loud guitar, and he still came across pretty well.
Basically if no one talks during the performance we'll be heard, if anyone talks they'll drown out the guitar.

Thanks for all the good wishes, folks. Les and James, thanks so much for joining us. It really made me a lot more comfortable to know that someone in the audience knew what I was trying to accomplish.
This showcase is a round robin format, with three players. Teja is a constant, and his playing is a bit on the abstract side, veering toward the Celtic. He's doing less tapping these days, but it still pops up now and then. The third player, Andy Markham, _really_ leans on the abstract modernist end, although he's usually coming from a folkie starting point. So basically I was the only one playing melodies you could hum <grin>. I think the audience enjoyed the contrast between the relaxed simplicity of ki ho`alu and the more complex stuff the other guys did.

Another great performance last night Fran. I did enjoy the contrasting styles of play. There were a couple of songs that Teja played that I really enjoyed. Andy was definitely out there... He was pretty innovative combining his slide and finger picking skills. His volume was a little low at times. You on the other had had plenty of volume. I went to stand in the back of the room and was still able to clearly hear your playing. I finally got to meet your wife Lynn. She is so excited about your upcoming plans. I also go to meet Doug Young, whom I saw you round robin with at the Acoustic Guitar night at the Mission City Coffee in San Jose. I met with James before the performance to go over some ki ho'alu workshop notes and instructional books, cds, and dvds. Thanks for letting us try out the Yamamoto, I would love the have that guitar, but I bet its way out of my price range.... Thanks for a fun evening.

Hi Fran, Great show wednedsday night...it was absolutely wonderful !...a very nice cafe in a warm & quaint setting in a neighborhood with not hard to find parking !...The setting reminds me of the Diamond Head Cove Health Bar on Monsarrat...they also have live music...you and Lynn ought to drop by there. Loved your music as well as Teja and Andy's...a variety of somewhat contrasting styles yet fully appreciated by all in attendance...anyone that stands (sit ) up and play deserve praise. Very nice Yamamoto guitar indeed ( I'll take a half dozen please )..it was a very inspiring concert for me...mahalo...James I'll be jamming with Les soon in order to point out my corrections . |

James: I dont think I will be pointing out anything. We are just going to help each other out a little. Like the blind leading the blind. We'll have fun. Les |
