With all this time spent in the house, all cooped up, I've been listening to plenty of music. I have revisited the stuff we have featuring Dennis Pavao, both the stuff with Hui `Ohana and his solo recordings. Is there anyone with more beautiful falsetto? And his non-falsetto music is beautiful as well. He is a talented musician as well as a wonderful singer. He plays `ukulele, the Tahitian `ukulele or banjo or whatever that thing is, also slack key guitar! What couldn't he do. It is very sad that his life was cut so short. My favorite of his recordings is Keiki Kupuna. I can play that over and over and over and never get tired of it.
I invite you to visit Auntie Maria's web site and listen to samples of the wonderful music featuring Dennis Pavao. Revisit some of the classic mele that he so beautifully sings. http://www.mele.com/music/artist/dennis+pavao/keiki+kupuna/

Ken Potts, of KP Ukulele (Lahaina), was a good friend of Dennis and, I believe, made many of his ukulele. Back in 2004 Ken made a DVD, "Building the Hawaiian Ukulele" with the proceeds going to benefit Dennis' family. The DVD is still available ($45, including shipping) and I note, on Ken's website, that he now donates a portion of the sale of each of his "Pavao Cutaway Tenor" ukulele to Dennis' children. http://kpukulele.com/
I, too, cherish Dennis' singing, both the falsetto and non-falsetto. In fact, I know what I'm going to turn on in my iTunes right now... |

No. Absolutely not. It's one point I will not equivocate on. His falsetto was the first I ever heard from Hawai`i and, as most of you know by now, it changed my life.

Yes, Dennis was wonderful. When I brought back "Best of Hui Ohana" after our first trip to the islands in '88, I played it over and over. I still listen to that and marvel at Dennis/Led/Nedward.
I feel very fortunate that I heard and talked to Dennis at the Ka`anapali Marriott a few months before his aneurism. When he sang "God Bless My Daddy" that night, the chicken skin was indesribable.

Here is a piece from You Tube with Dennis singing "All Hawai`i Stand Together". It is really quite a powerful montage. Shows his musical versatility. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_aTWRnSZzQ |
