I really must tell you that these vintage Sesame Street videos are absolutely fantastic and precious. The Sesame Street gang takes a trip to Hawai`i and learns all about the Islands, history and culture from the Beamer `ohana -- Nona, Keola and Kapono. Wonderful talk story, legends, music, hula, learning language, etc. I strongly urge you to watch these and see a young Auntie Nona with dark hair (and Keola, too!).
Priceless. |

That was great, who knew Keola and kin would've been on Sesame Street. Wonder where else he's popped up. |

Because of "Honolulu City Lights", the brothers were worldwide superstars in the mid-70s, before they were labeled "slack key" or "world music".

Someone perhaps can help me with this video. While the gang is sitting around the fire singing and playing instruments, you will see Buffy Ste. Marie playing guitar & singing, as well as Keola & Kapono Beamer. Who is the Hawaiian man also playing guitar, and who is the lady playing `ukulele. She is harder to see, but the mystery man playing guitar often is quite visible. http://youtube.com/watch?v=SwfSle2glk0
Thanks, Wanda |

Priceless, indeed! Snuffleupagus in search of his kupuna, the legendary mountain that only awakes every 100 years, Mt. Ihu Papa'a Lo'ihi Noi.
Lee Cataluna talked with Keola Beamer, Buffy Ste. Marie, and others about the making of these episodes in the Honolulu Advertiser in December. Apparently these were shot in July 1977 and aired in January 1978 - which would predate the release of "Honolulu City Lights."
I remember seeing them all as they aired. I was six years old. My parents had not advanced technologically to the point of owning a VCR. So, instead, I captured the episodes on a portable cassette recorder placed next to the 3" speaker on the TV. This was for nought as eventually mom said I had too many cassettes and made me throw them away completely unjudiciously. She made me toss Lionel Hampton bootlegs, too.
If she could see my collection now, she would have [another] heartattack.

Jesse - I think we saw the Ue o Muite already, but I sure don't mind hearing it again and again. The others were great, as well. Once again you have delighted us with your pickin' and singin'. Mahalo nui loa.
