I'm trying to transcribe these lyrics from Mele Hula V#2 and need some help. The stuff in parentheses I'm unsure of; and if somebody is real bored, comments on the rest are welcome too. You know, okina's and all that. None of my CD's with this mele have the lyrics inside and I can't find it on-line, so...help!

HILO ONE

a ia`i Hilo one
ka e ha`a ku(kuh) mana`o
oh swee-eet em-ileee-ah
o ko`u aloha I`a

a i`a`i Hilo one
ka e ha` a ku(kuh) mana`o
oh swee-eet em-ileee-ah
o ko`u aloha I`a

a na`a ke`ko loh`he
ki`ina i ka li`kou
i`iwi po`o lena
o ka manu o`ka u`ka

kou ho`ole o`ia la
i ka i ana ma`i
ke i`a me`e a`u
ka iwi a`oe (n)e`(airee?) (marry?)

Ha`ina ka`puana
a i`a`i Hilo one
oh swee-eet em-ileee-ah
o ko`u aloha I`a

thanks,
Ross

Ross, repeat after me: "Google, google, google!" Here you go (from hulahips.com):

HILO ONE

Aia i Hilo one ka `eha a ka mana`o There at Hilo-one is the haunt of my thoughts
O sweet Emalia `o ko`u hoa ia Sweet Emalia is the one who is my companion

Nänä ke kolohe ki`ina i ka liko Hers is the naughty way of getting the tender bud
`I`iwi pölena 'o ka manu o ka uka `I`iwi pölena is the bird of the upland

Kohu `ole `oia ala i ka `i `ana mai No one compares with the way she implies
Eia no me a`u ka `iwi o Heneri Here with me is the profound love of Henry

Ha`ina ka puana aia i Hilo one The story is told for there at Hilo-one
O sweet Emalia `o ko`u aloha ia Sweet Emalia, she is my love

My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can.

Hmmm, Henry? I've got some notes saying that Emalia is Emalia Kaihumua who was one of King Kalakaua's court dancers, but nothing on Heneri.

Hmmm...not sure where hulahips.com got the lyrics and translation they have posted for this tune, but here's what was originally recorded:

Aia i Hilo One, ka `eha a ka mana`o
O Sweet Emalia, `o ko`u aloha ia

(At Hilo lives the the one who gives me a headache
Sweet Emalia who is my love)

Nana ke kolohe, ki`ina i ka liko
`I`iwi polena, `o ka manu o ka uka

(Look at the rascal, she is picking the bud
The scarlet honey-creeper, the bird of the uplands)

Kohu `ole `oiala i ka `i `ana mai
"Eia me a`u ka iwi a`o Heneri"

(She is silly to say to me
"Here with me is the bone of Henry")

Ha`ina ka puana, aia i Hilo One
O Sweet Emalia, o ko`u aloha ia

(Thus ends my song about
Sweet Emalia who is my love)

Note: Emalia was Emalia Kaihumua.
But the question of "Heneri" remains!

Google, Giggle, Giggle

I love those interpretations:

haunts my thoughts
vs
gives me a headache

Thanks for those translations!
any more takers?

Not to mention:

Here with me is the profound love of Henry
vs.
Here with me is the bone of Henry

Talk about cutting to the chase.

Translations can vary widely. Unfortunately, my knowledge of Hawaiian language is nil, but I hope to start studying soon.

According to one source that I have, "In the 3rd verse, "iwi" is short for "iwi hilo," an old Hawaiian expression in songs that figuratively means "love rooted deep to the bones."

Experts please speak now...

All I can say is...

When I hear Hui Ohana do Hilo One (on their 198x disc), I usually start "tear-ing in the eye". You can tell someone is at great anguish in this mele without even knowing the words. And the harmony of Led and Ned and Dennis is absolutely divine in this performance. I wish I could sing like that!!

(P.S. NOT and expert opinion)

(P.P.S. But yes... an EX-SPURT opinion - defined as a "has-been high pressure drip") (OK... OK... an engineers and scientists joke)

Lawrence, how about ex-spurt, "a jerk under pressure"? The things you pick-up in the military, huh?

Yeah, I agree, those harmonies are IT man!
