Knock 'em dead, Harry B.! You are not old enough to be called an icon. You are only about my age. I am not old enough to be called an icon.
An impressive line up, if I have ever seen one. Congrats. Carnegie Hall. Wow! |

I can't believe I am finally going to get to meet George Matsushita. He is amazing and has such a long history in Hawaiian music in Japan.
This is a great show. We have been hearing about it for a long time but nobody had put a date on it. Thank goodness, too, for Yasuhika Ariga. He is U`ilani Japan - without which some of the best things in Hawaiian music might never have happened...because he bankrolled them. (That includes Aunty Genoa's only Hoku Award-winning CD.)

With regard Aunty Genoa, in addition to the Sidney Grayson Award in 1980 (the predecessor to HARA's Lifetime Achievement Award), she's been given 2 other Na Hoku Hanohano Awards.
1992 -- Anthology Album of the Year -- "Hana Hou" 1995 -- Female Vocalist of the Year -- "Hula Hou" |

Here's a quick plug for the Halawai events calendar that tries to list any and all Hawaiʻi related events in New York City.
I'm looking forward to the show too. |

When I say her "only Hoku Award winning CD," I mean awarded to her for her vocal work on a single CD.
The Sidney Grayson Award is an honorary award - not for any particular recorded work. No less of an honor, but... The Anthology award is presented to the producer - not the artist. So regrettably that was not really Aunty's award, but Don McDiarmid's (despite that she did the work).
I didn't mean to split hairs, but most of Aunty Genoa's finest work was released in the pre-Hokus era. "Hula Hou" is the only CD for which Aunty directly received the award for a current work, and I think it is the most important since it proved that the then 76-year-old still had it. And she had it until the very end.
I wonder if when she was awarded the Grayson Award if anyone ever thought she would go on to twice as long a career as she had already had at that point? A lifetime achievement award at the midpoint of her career! Amazing woman, and still constantly in my thoughts...
