Aaack Paul!
We can't possibly make it on such short notice, but please say you'll put something similar together for the week we are at George's camp in June.
Pretty please...

Aaack also from Cleveland, OH. Do something like that on O`ahu during the last two weeks of May. Pretty please? Or what the heck. Come to Cleveland. We need Hawaiian music in Ohio. Desperately. The market is here. You shoulda seen all the folks at the hula workshop and the lu`au. Gets bigger every year. |

I and Weniki be there! I'll take pictures of the usual suspects! maybe the cake this time! I'll see if I can send one to Andy to post. I swear, we are lucky, cause we were here last year and got to go to the last party too! There is a self evident synergy in Haiwaiian music. Jammed with Job and the group in Kahana today, a very healing and energising experiance. Damn!

On-the-spot reporting by Honokowai Pete.
It was great! We were able, under the guise of taking pictures for Taro Patch, to get into the party and, of course, get front row center aisle seats for the concert. I also got to carry the Grammy! Let me turn over to Weniki the actual reportage of the concert. We have pictures, but we're internet challenged at this point. Time to go swimming.

Last night at Maui’s Napili Kai, home of the Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Concert Series, we celebrated Hawaii’s 3-time Grammy winners with pupus, cake and beverages while the sun set spectacularly crimson on the ocean. There were about 150 attendees at the Grammy party and about 300+ attendees at the awesome concert that followed in the Hale Aloha Pavilion tent.
On hand was George Kahumoku, Jr., the host of the Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar series that began in October 2003 and have played consecutive shows since then. Also in attendance were most of the other Grammy winners, including Ledward Kaapana, Dennis Kamakahi, Keoki Kahumoku, Bobby Ingano, Owana Salazar, Richard Ho’Opi’i, Peter DeAquino, and Sterling Seaton. Paul Konwiser (one of the show’s producers) was there to introduce the stellar performers. Auntie Edna (winner of the NaHoku Hano Hano Lifetime Achievement award) was also in attendance. Daniel Ho could not attend as he is performing in Japan right now. Cyril Pahinui, Martin Pahinui, and Garrett Probst could not attend as well. Their slack key compilation, “Treasures of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar”, combining ki ho’alu and Hawaiian vocals, walked off with yet another Grammy award in Los Angeles this February.
Each of the performers played their favorites: Ledward played 3 slack key songs, including Radio Hula; Dennis Kamakahi played his famous composition, Koke’e, with Bobby Ingano on the old-fashioned fry-pan lap steel guitar; Owana Salazar played Hula Blues and sang a medley of Hi’ilawe/Waterfall; Richard Ho’opi’i sang 2 falsetto pieces in honor of Auntie Genoa Keawe who influenced so many Hawaiian performers; Bobby Ingano led Moonwalk with George, Ledward, Peter, and Keoki, a real classic that everyone loved; and Peter DeAquino sang He’ne He’ne Kou Aka with the entire repertoire of performers, to the delight of the audience. The youngest Grammy winner, Sterling Seaton, played a Spanish-inspired piece in honor of the origins of guitars to the islands. Their hana hou was a rousing rendition of Where is That Black Dog? led by Keoki Kahumoku.
All in all, this was one awesome kanikapila. That’s what this felt like, a backyard kanikapila, with the cream of the crop playing slack key guitar, ukulele, steel guitar, and vocalizing. It was an honor to be present for such a memorable event.
Next time you are in Maui, make sure to attend the Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar concert, held every Wednesday evening in Napili. Go to www.SlackKey.com for more information.
Aloha from Maui, Weniki

Congrats to the Masters! Honokowai Pete - thanks for the on-the-spot reporting for the benefit of all who could not be there. I can feel almost as if I had been there. |
