For any one who hasn't seen Chris-- don't miss this chance. He is a truly wonderful guitarist deserving of much greater recognition. What I really enjoy is that Chris has found his own voice-- he doesn't sound like anyone else.
That other guy isn't too bad, either. |

Bolo I love the version of Opihi moemoe you and Chris do (which can be viewed on the Woddsong Acoustics Web Site). In 50 years I might be able to play that well. (but then I would be beyond a centenarian) |

Allow me to second this observation. I would travel a fair distance to hear Chris play.

Chris will be in Phoenix, AZ, this weekend, (March 15-16) playing at the 14th Annual AZ Aloha Festival. He'll be playing with Moon Kahele (Moon just moved back home to Hawai'i earlier this year). I met, more like saw and heard, Chris at AMC in June 2007. Looking forward to hearing and seeing him again! |

Aloha all -
This morning (Sunday the 6th) Keola called and asked if I could sub for Chris on this tour.
I don't know all the details, save that Chris has to attend to an illness in the family. My heart goes out to Chris and his loved ones.
I know many of you were looking forward to hearing him. I'll try to fill his shoes as best I can.
Hope to see some old friends & make some new ones.

Mark, I look forward to seeing / hearing you and Keola in Grass Valley. As if your plate wasn't full enough right now !! For everyone who hasn't heard Mark, he's incredibly talented with a broad musical range and also a very nice guy. (Also has an exceptional Dennis Lake ukulele, coveted by some other musicians who will remain nameless.) Any chance you will bring your dulcimer? |

Lynn!
Are you in CA at this time? I had thought about driving up to Nevada City where friends of mine lived years ago. Don't even know if they are still alive...

Keola & Moanalani Beamer & Chris Nelson in play at Yoshi's in Oakland.... Yes unfortunately Chris Yeaton was unable to perform due to family emergency ...so in place was a fine guitarist by the name of Mark Nelson who actually wanted to attend the concert, but at the last minute sat in for Chris Yeaton. Mark began the show and played 4 songs on his guitar, dulcimer and ukulele...an humourous man he is as he got the audience to loosen up...and he added a bit of the blues to the slack. Next came Keola and Moanalani....his first song just set the tone for the magical evening...he brought his guitar to life and vice versa...his magical hands made the instrument speak and you can feel how he became one with the instrument...the sounds just permeated the whole room and the energy was moving. You can literally see and feel the aloha spirit just rising ! Keola performed a song called Kananaka ( I just hope that's the title ) ...about being in a magical place called Maui and in 24 years there he and Moanalani saw a night rainbow for the 3rd time. The song just blew me away and I was completely mesmerized by his uncanny ability to story tell and just draw the audience in. Fortunately I was able to hang for the 2nd concert as he played many of my favorites Po Mahina and Ka Wailele O' Akaka and Makika...Mark and Keola performed a song about his horse which was so funny. If you ever get the chance ask then about the train ! Moanalani added many a beautiful hula and instrument playing accompanying Keola. And to close the show Keola said it best by saying it wasn't the size of the audience but being among friends. He closed out the set by performing Honolulu City Lights...incredible !....no doubt he's the man ! |
