This time, Pa Kettle helped me with two of these entries. He stumbled across Weldon at Tiki's and Ohta-san/Herb, Jr. doing Hi`ilawe. We saw Weldon at Tiki's when we were there last May. It was most excellent.

Elvis's guitar player was James Burton, master of the Telecaster. Recording artist when he was 16, lead guitar for Ricky Nelson when he was 18, part of Emmylou Harris's first Hot Band after Elvis left us, first call studio player any time he wasn't on the road.

I believe the sartorial credit should go to The Maddox Brothers and Rose. That band knew how to dress! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpPXb8vtr_4&feature=related

] Actually, Rhinestone suits and cowboy boots (I wonder how I came up with THAT??? ;) ) were rife in country music and cowboy films starting in the 40's, just after WWII. People like the Hanks (Williams, Thompson and Snow), Webb Pierce, Ernest Tubb, Roy Rogers (with applique' duds by N. Turk innstead of rhinestones) were "dudeing" it up along with The Maddox brothers and Rose and before Porter Waggoner. My favorite Nudie suit is the on worn by Ernie Ashworth. He was a one hit wonder - "Talk Back Trembling Lips" - so his suit had red rhinetone lips randomly placed all over it. |

Hey, I dindn't see rhinestones in that cut, but watch Rose sing "Honky Tonkin'" - the steel player is Mayne Smith, of San Fransisco, who got me into slipry music back in 1975. He's a very fine pedal steel and Dobro player (and human being) -watch it!

There is only one tune there: Moana Chimes. He just sped it up to show off a little bit. But listen closely and you'll hear the melody is the same throughout.
