The Polynesian Voyaging Society is exploring the idea of sending the canoe Hokule'a on an ambitious three-year, around-the-world journey beginning in February 2011.
Please read the followinig from today's Star Bulletin: http://starbulletin.com/2008/03/16/news/story02.html
At the end of the article, you can click to read comments that folks have made about the article. What surprises me is that people believe there is some ulterior motive involved. Maybe someone believes that Nainoa Thompson has some personal agenda, that he only wants to be in the spotlight; maybe someone believes that this is a waste of taxpayers money.
For me, I take it for what it is - a way to showcase the Hokule`a to the world, to show the workmanship involved in such a beautiful vessel and the acumen of those who sail by the stars. It is a way to show the entire world that there is more to Hawai`i than beaches and shave ice and hula with a coconut bra.
No conspiracy. Why do folks always look for the bad?

Yeah! I read the article and I replied to the negative statements. That's what i said before, there will always be anti somethings who used to wear white sheets to hide themselves from the good people on this earth. Cowardice knows no boundaries and it is easy to mouth off anonymously. Even today we Hawaiians get attacked for just being alive. |

I think the voyage is a great idea. It is a good way to show the world a great piece of Hawaiian culture. As Wanda said, there is so much more about Hawaiʻi that needs to be known and that we are not just a playground for tourists, but a people with an immensely rich culture and history. I know a lot of people I have met around the world that have not even heard of Hawaiʻi. Seriously, for the size of Hawaiʻi compared to a lot of other nations in the world, it's amazing to see how much we have. We could compete with any other society that is supposedly "cultured" (France, China, etc.) We got it all. Tax money might be a legitimate concern, but it's ridiculous to hear that some are suspecting ulterior motives. Come on, now. |
